Ok, it seem effectivally to be a keyboard problem (I remember some identicall problems with Ctrl-+ and Ctrl-6 with some laptop).
The easiest way to remove it is probably to change the shortcut.
In spellcheck.kmm replave the line 31:
setaccel"CTRL *","macros(SpellCheck");
by
setaccel"CTRL !","macros(SpellCheck"); if you choose Ctrl-!
It ought to do the trick
