Yikes, what are you doing??? Especially on this page here I don't think any scripts are used at all, I have no problems using the forum fully without javascript. So my guess is that this popup probably came from another page in the background. One of the pages you visit regularly must have a huge bug in engine sniffing and delivers special non-standard scripts for some specific browser, perhaps IE... Try to figure out which of your pages that is.
By the way, what have you set as user agent?

Hi, mrbig,

then you will have to try a completely new installation:
[1] Did you install from a *.exe installer? Then uninstall from ->ControlPanel ->AddRemove Programs. If not, start with "2"

[2] ->Start ->Search ->Files or Folders for your K-Meleon program folder, selecting: "All Local Drives"

[3] Rename that folder (those folders?) to K-Myyyeleon (this way you'll be able to refind it later, if need be.)

[4] Do a similar search for ALL profile folders (may be you have more than one...).Best is to search for folders called "Profiles". Rename to "Proyyyfiles. Be sure not to rename "Profiles" folders owned by other programs than K-Meleon.

[5] Won't help, probably, but no damage done, too: RESTART the computer.

[6] Do a fresh install and test that.

[7] Come back here to report success / get more help

[8] ...Help you may need to restore parts of the renamed profiles. Do NOT try restoring before having tested thoroughly AND BACKED UP your new installation.

Cheers

You should not get the pop up warning with javascript disabled, that is weird.
For what you say your installation it's OK, and you have a 10MB connection... that is FAST. Is everything else in you computer running fine?

I have this problem too. It happens if I have 6-8 windows opened. I get a message "Warning. K-Meleon not responsing" or something like that. CPU using by K-Meleon in this case is about 50% and RAM using ~120 MB. (I have 3Gb RAM installed.) When K-meleon hangs one of opened windows get blank and current window is not responsed.
To finish hanging I close blank window and all windws get closed too.
At next start K-M I get message "K-Meleon was closed improperly. Do you ..."
I tried clean unzipping K-M in new folder, creating new profile with no results.
I never have this problem with FF 3.6 and Iron when I open the same web sites and the same windows. Puzzle?

........meaning, of course: you might want to share some detailed information about your installations, eventually? Like: OS Version, CPU GHz, RAM, K-M installed version (downloaded file name), zip or installer installation, did/do you have other installations on the same machine?, content of the profile.ini, content of the profiles.ini.
You might also start ->tools ->error console in a separate window early in the browsing session. Let the browser window not cover the error console window. For a start, tick "Hide Duplicates" in "Options". Report at least some of the Errors/Warnings.

So, you have 2 profiles of the same name and the same "default" status in your K-Meleon\profiles\ folder? And, considering they're called *.second, where is the first? Maybe the "profile.ini" in your K-Meleon\ folder could tell you more. If there is none there, or if a line therein tells you that "isrelative=0", then your REAL working profile is in your "\documents and settings\user\app data\" folder. Maybe it is better to sort that out before going further. Your case might be different from mrbig's, though, as he didn' state one special site as especially susceptible.

Note:
    [a] profile.ini in K-M folder:
[1] not present: profile in AppDataFolder
[2] contains "isrelative=0": profile in AppData Folder
      [3] present, but empty: like(4),
[4] contains "isrelative=1": profile in K-Meleon Folder, within the folder with the name given in "path=" (better not change THAT now, I'm not sure about side effects)
{b] profiles.ini in Profiles folder: (what a difference an "s" makes...)
[1] (1st line) [ProfileNumber] : start Counting from Zero!
[2] (2nd line) Name= : The name you see in the ProfileManager PopUp window
[3] (3rd line) Path= : The name of the folder containing your actual profile.
[4] (4th line) IsRelative= : do not change the value given here unless you know what you are doing.
[5] (5th line) Default= : only one out of the profiles listed should show a "1" here. That will be the default, the standard, the one that is loaded automatically, all others should have a "0" here.
[6] ("General"line) StartWithLastProfile=1 : imagine you loaded a different profile by starting from the commandline or a shortcut - would you want K-Meleon to use that one from then on, on every new start? then it should be "1", else "0".

@SoerenB, many thanks for your helping.
1. I have no profile.ini in K-Meleon folder. I dont use K-M as portable browser.
2. You are right - my profiles.ini was not correct.
I saved it and edited this file. It looks now as:

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
Path=mwlph2so.second
IsRelative=1
Default=1

It seems OK for a while.
I guess that Profile Manager didn't delete one of my profiles many time ago and it was deleted by me manually, but profiles.ini was not corrected.

Best wishes.

Since there have been no posts here for 6 months was this problem resolved?
I have a pentium 4 with 2 gb of memory. This computer is super fast on and
off the internet with everything except for K-Meleon. It constantly freezes.
I have other computers that are much smaller which have no problems at all
with K-Meleon. It is just that it is not practical for me to use one of them
instead. What to do sad smiley

Frankly, everyone will recommend something different, what *I* would try at the current moment, with a modern system, is to download desga's latest cp4-version of KM1.6 (pre-Beta). It still has some bugs, but the big advantage is that it's already fully portable out-of-the-box, contains a profile.ini and the two infamous Visual dll's. And it rules out probs with the old gecko1.8. I don't mean this for daily use now, but it would definitely be a good start for examining your SPEED prob.

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?2,109196,110032#msg-110032

Download, unzip to disk, and start it by clicking the k-meleon.exe directly.

Hi, Frustration, and welcome,

my first sug*gestion is the same as sirias.
Just to make things perfectly clear: when unzipping, stay clear from your existing KM installation - that way you'll be able to import things from there to the new one - but only later, when you have made sure the new one runs smoothly.
And let K-Meleon create a completely new profile, do not interfere with that!

If you don't like this solution: as you stated, this is not a general K-Meleön problem, but one of that particular installation - so we need more info about that. Maybe read this thread again to find out how to find which info from you could help us helping you.

(not mentioned anywhere there, but possibly helpful: which extensions installed?)

Thanks for the suggestions, siria and SoerenB. I am now currently testing the
KM1.6 (pre-Beta). And it does work a little better than my other K-Meleon builds.
I do have many copies of K-Meleon portables installed. But it too still has
problems. So I tried this suggestion for Firefox:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+hangs
It too helps only a little. So I was wondering if hyper threading could be
problem. I have been reading a lot about it and it seems that this technology
can improve performance up to 30%. But possibly more often than not it
decreases performance.
Does anyone have any idea if K-Meleon is made to perform best with or without it?

possibly helpful: which extensions installed?

when comparing the machine concerned with your smaller ones, do you surf the same sites? And again: same extensions? same plugin versions (type about:plugins in URLBar, -> return)? You should seriously exclude these problem sources.

I just can't help feeling that it must be something external to KM, on that computer, or it wouldn't run so fast on all other and much smaller machines. As if there's some other tool or setting on that box that interferes and strangles the browser, perhaps some security tool?? Or some incompatible windows themes or such?

Re: browser hangs

Thanks again guys. I am wanting to test all these possibilities. I have not yet even looked in the bios to see if I can disable the hyper threading. And as you
seem to note that may not even be the problem. I have tried both SATA and IDE
hard drives in this computer with the same results. I have many portable K-Meleon
copies on the computer that are copies of the same ones that are on the other computers. I have tried fresh installs on here but that does not help. I had
Windows XP SP3. Downgraded to SP2 to see if that would help. It does not.

I have not added any extentions to any of the KM's. When someone makes a special
build with any I disable them. For instance one had ad block which I disabled.
Again it was of no help. I just leave the plugins set at their default except
for usually enabling Bookmarks, Favorites and the Hotlist.

I do not believe in things that slow my computer. So I have never used any
real time anti virus protection. I think my security setup is possibly
strong enough as in any year all I may pick up is maybe 1 item that SpyBot
or my anti virus scanner rates as nothing more than a mere annoyance.

So the only real time protection I use is my old Kerio 2.1.5, SpyBot,
SpywareBlaster and ScripTrap. This is ScripTrap
http://keir.net/scriptrap.html

I have also tried Script Defender instead. It is here:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/System/sdefend/Freeware.htm

I have tried Trust-No-Exe but am not currently using as I got a bit lazy
about adding new programs into it. It is here:
http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions/trust-no-exe/trust-no-exe.htm

Also I do not even let my Clam Win antivirus run to check for updates
when I'm not using it. I do manula updates.

And here is the information from about:plugins on one of my problem KM's.

Sure hope someone sees something there. :s

Hi, Frustration,

No, first you have to do some tests.

( ahm, well,...:
Quote

So I tried this suggestion for Firefox:
[support.mozilla.com]
I can't see WHICH of the several tips you followed ..)

But, no, not now.

1) JRE 1.6.0_21: I dimly remember having had difficulties with that one - forgot if they gave speed problems. But I did downgrade to 1.6.0_20. Is that installed on those other machines, too?

2) That gives us the prompt: Most likely, not all of your machines run with exactly the same security software AT EXACTLY THE SAME SETTINGS. It's here that you should inquire now, IMHO.

3) No need to lower your defences, for a start - on the contrary: take those of your machines without which you can do easily. Try installing and configuring all 4 of your security apps exactly the way they are configured on machine A.:
(uninstall any secApp which you don't have on A first)

Kerio 2.1.5
SpywareBlaster
ScripTrap
SpyBot (including it's "immunisation" settings and it's "TeaTimer")
notaBene: with the other three, I simply dont know what to have a closer look for - maybe someone else can help?
But I suspect any of them to have quite some potential for slowing down the machine or/and the browser even when not misconfigured.

If you do this one-by-one, speedTesting extensively in between, you should be able to find the culprit, I guess.

Cheers

Hi, Frustration,

ran across a solution to a completely unrelated problem these last hours, but it showed on one machine sparing the other, so you may just want to check (not much hope, though .. I wrote here):

Quote
myself
I had always started the "buggy" KM from a shortcut that DID show the complete path ("R:\KM\k-meleon.exe -new") in the "Target" box, BUT:
the "Execute in" (or is it "Execute from in English Windows?) was blank.
That was it. Period.
...(The problem exists ..) if - ONLY from a Shortcut - KM is NOT informed TWICE about it's path - I suspect, this is a Windows security thing.
