Having trouble installing in Windows 7.
Date: March 22, 2010 03:15AM
So basically, I've installed K-Meleon, and I really, really like it. It fits my three criterea for a good browser - it loads pages quickly, has a fast urlbar, and has support for an adblock plus plugin, even if it's not the latest.
I'm having a really hard time getting Windows to see it as a web browser, though. I've tried to force-run SetDefault.exe as an administrator (control-shift-right-click) and it's executed without any hitches, but my old browser (Firefox) still loads when I click URLs in IRC. When I go into Default Programs to associate URL file types with K-Meleon, it's not even on the list! I've gone into the Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, but the "Enable access to this program" is unchecked. I've tried ticking the checkbox, but it doesn't do *anything* - if I immediately load up the Set Program Access window again, the box has managed to uncheck itself! If I hit the K-Meleon radio button, it checks the box, but it goes back to the Use My Current Web Browser option as soon as I close the window, which turns out to be Firefox, and again the Enable Access button becomes unchecked again.
This is extremely frustrating. K-Meleon is a fantastic web browser, and this seems to be the only issue I've got with it. Please help!

It seems, reading forums, that Firefox is particulary sticky.
So, you can perhaps try first to set IE as default, open then Firefox, and uncheck it to ask for be the default browser, and then to ask K-Meleon to be the one.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it hasn't improved anything. I still can't even keep the Enable Access button checked.

Just curious and no idea if that may have any influence: do you have installed KM as portable version? Check in Edit>Config.>Profile Folder if it is inside the program folder or in user appdata?
A microsoft link, although you probably know that, but hey, if nothing helps?? For example it says that default programs are different per user account :O

It's using AppData.
Also, I knew about the MS link - funny thing is, K-Meleon doesn't even show up in the Programs list.

Defaulter did not work, and the other two tutorials assume that your browser (Firefox in the examples, K-Meleon in my case) is listed in the Programs list. It is not in my case.

Tried everything in that link; no dice it'd seem. SetDefault.exe just set *firefox* as the default, not KM.

Hi, Lakmir,
a short, but maybe decisive, question to start: about which KM version
are we talking here? You may want to refer to
how to make default browser

Tried everything in that link

The windowshelp.microsoft.com Windows Vista Help page I referenced says this:
If a program does not show up in the Programs list
If a program does not show up in the list, you can make the program
a default by using Set Associations.
1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.
2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
3. Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for.
4. Click Change program.
5. Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you
selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional
programs.
(If your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want
to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able
to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)
6. Click OK.
Note: You cannot change an association for a file type or protocol and
leave it blank or disassociated. You must select a new program.

If this does not work with the KM 1.5.4
installer version, I really don't know.

Yes, I've tried that. The browse button only appears for items in the Extensions list, not the Protocols list.
The version I'm using is 1.54, full package with installer.
I'm wondering if windows somehow thinks this and Firefox 3 are the same thing. I might try uninstalling Firefox later.

Hi,
found another link:
with good screenshots.
There, "Extensions list" & "Protocols list" are not mentioned as separate entities in
the (decisive) ASSOCIATE A FILE TYPE OR PROTOCOL WITH A PROGRAM link?

Do not get confused by the three Default Programs control panels.
???
Well, I must admit, I'm on XP...

Unfortunately, at least in Windows 7, they're separate. The browse button was available for File Types, but not for Protocols.
Anyway, uninstalling Firefox seems to have "fixed" the problem. I think I'm going to submit this as a bug on the tracker, because the two appear to conflict with each other. Though I STILL can't enable K-M in the Set Program Access window, it is at least opening when I click links in IRC, which was my main gripe in the first place.
