New user, NEED help with password manager and page loading/sizing issues

Hi all,

I have only started using this browser today, actually less than 3 hours ago, and so far i am LOVING it...but i have two issues driving me insane!

ok..am now using K-Meleon, and so far IT ROCKS!!!

but....i got two issues with it that are driving me insane LOL

1. EVERY time i go to post/reply to a topic or refresh to see new posts, or reload any page that required a login (after i have already loggd in) i have the password manager popping up asking which username i want to use on the form....and i can't figure out how to stop it doing that, have looked through all settings etc, and found the password manager thing but there is nothing about it constantly asking me...so if i turn it off, will it still remember my passwords etc??

2. i have ONE stupid website that won't load properly (so far) i have tried changing the User Agent, and it makes no difference. The page loads perfectly in other browsers, but in this one, it's like it's been zoomed in to like 500% or something and zooming in or out makes no difference either....which sucks because the login area for this site is in the area that is not showing on the screen..

Any ideas?? so far this k-meleon is brilliant, and has not crashed once yet, and it is NOT hogging my memory which is awesome....which is WHY i changed over to K-Meleon, but i REALLY need to fix these two issues.

Any help would be appreciated, however, please try to keep it simple for me as my coding abilities are not to be desired/

Thank you all in advance,

Lady_Artemis

Hi and welcome smiling smiley
just some thoughts...
Are you sure you have writing access to your profile folder? Add a bookmark to test and look if it stays saved...

Actually I've never used the passwords manager at all, since I prefer to keep my logins stored in cookie-exceptions.
Perhaps that would suffice for you too, no idea, but if you wanna try, click
F2(=Edit>Preferences) > Privacy
UNcheck the passwords manager, instead set cookies to "Accept Always". A bit further right, choose how long to remember them.
Login to your sites.
Return to those cookie settings, click "Currently stored cookies" find and remember the site names you want to allow (that's a bit stupid, but guess there are some cookie extensions out there). Close, and click a bit on the left on cookies "Exceptions". Add them there and click "Allow". Done! Now you can block cookies again, and will still stay logged in.

Another menu way to set the same cookie permission is
Tools > Privacy > View Data > View Cookies (=currently stored)
Tools > Privacy > Permissions > Cookies (=exceptions)

By the way check out View > Toolbars > Privacy Bar, that has some very handy buttons for quickly toggling permissions for stuff like cookies, javascript, etc.

For your problem #2, can you perhaps post the site adress?
There might be some setting or workaround for KM1.5.4, but frankly the gecko engine in it is version 1.8.x (though with safety updates from a few months ago), which doesn't know the most modern scripts yet, which some webmasters already use for layout sad smiley There's a KM1.6 alpha version out there, alas still in development state, which uses gecko 1.9.x, and mostly works fine on sites of that sort. It's availabe for testing on http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/kmeleon16 (some systems may need that VS2005 library installed too, download link to MS on same page)

Hi Siria,

thanks for your reply. I have now disabled the password manager, but, haven't yet touched the cookies side of it, though i will do that shortly. Those constant popups were starting to drive me insane!

With the second problem, so far it is the only website i have found that won't display correctly, which may be a result of some changes they are in the process of making. The site loads perectly in all other browsers tested (firefox, seamonkey,opera, google chrome, IE7 and flock). I run a dual-boot system between linux and windows XP (if that helps) but i have not tested this browser in linux as yet, though i intend to run this browser on my linux distro as it is by far the best browser i have come accross that runs smoothly on older systems.

The system i am running is a very old laptop, with 256mb of ram, hence my choice of this browser. (again, don't know if the RAM issue will help in this issue?)
I also have the current version of Java Runtime Environment as well as the latest version of Flash Player installed.

The website in question is:

www.pureprofile.com

Thank you for your help so far, i really do appreciate it, if there is any further information that may help figuring out what the issue is, please let me know and i'll provide as much detail as possible smiling smiley

Gotta run sorry, just quick, you do know that KM is only for windows, not Linux...? ;-) There are people that have created special versions for Linux, but from what I understand quite some settings, macros etc. don't work right there...

Your site shows normal font size for me in KM154 (and win98se with 256 RAM :coolsmiling smiley, but half moved out of the right screen. Could probably cured with some user css, someone else may help you there ;-) It does display fine in KM1.6alpha. The direct login page is https://www.pureprofile.com/login/default.aspx?Redirect=http://www.pureprofile.com/de/de/home/welcome

ah ok, i had seen on linux forums of people using this browser, but, had not read into it, thanks for pointing that out, i generally use opera or fireox in linux, so i can continue with those for now, so it would be easier to stay with them for now.

yep it shows moved to the right here for me too, and at the time of posting could only think of it as having been "zoomed" in. I probably could have worded it better. I wouldn't have a clue about user CSS stuff, but, might take a look at KM1.6 alpha, if i can find a download link(i think i saw it on the home page) and see how that goes for me.

Hopefully, I'll have this sorted soon one way or another, and as i've only started using this browser today, have no problems changing over to an alpha version, if it solves my problemsmiling smiley

Thanks again for your help smiling smiley

Hi, Artemis,

... isn't that the kind of sites you should do a buzzword web search for, like "pureprofile.com scam" ... Not that I would know anything about them, but ... TANSTAFL ...

But the site design looks good & correct on 1.6 alpha4 here.

Cheers
SoerenB

Hi SoerenB,

Thanks for your reply. As for pureprofile scams etc, I have been a member with them for several years, and can state they are legit. I can safely say this issue is now resolved, as i just upgraded to the KM 1.6 Alpha version, and all pages seem to load correctly now.

I have found a bug in the settings menu, which i will report uner the 'bugs' discussion, it isn't anything major though, but still something worth looking at, though it could be just me....i don't knowgrinning smiley

1.6Alpha has several bugs yet,it's not even in beta state yet... You can read about it in the related threads... Guess in General and Development subforums...

What I actually do is use KM154 as main browser, but if a problematic site like yours comes up (very rarely for me) then I simply open an additional browser window with 1.6a :cool: Have 2 start icons in Taskbar. The commandline for 1.6 goes like "k-meleon -new". That "new" means open a new, independant browser instance. And I've copied over my profile and private skin, can really live well with that workaround. At any rate much better than with a completely different browser smiling smiley

purplefrofile fix for gecko 1.8

open usercontent.css in notepad (edit>configuration>userdefined css)

append:

@-moz-document url-prefix(http://pureprofile.com)
,url-prefix(https://pureprofile.com)
,url-prefix(http://www.pureprofile.com)
,url-prefix(https://www.pureprofile.com)
{
.ppLPContentHolder,.ppLPFooterFullBarPH{margin-left:-960px!important}
}

save file, restart browser

I have now got both KM 1.54 and KM 1.6Alpha installed on my system, but, would prefer to use just one browser. Would this CSS code that you have posted be "customisable" or in other words, can i use this same code for any other problematic site, by simply changing the url, or would i need to use different code depending on the issue of the site?

sorry, that is most likely a dumb question, but, it is one i have to ask tongue sticking out smiley

that css fix is only for pureprofile and isn't universal. for most sites that have display issues, a css fix isn't required..just changing the user agent to firefox and reloading the page should fix it (tools>user agent>firefox)

there's an extension that auto changes the ua automatically to firefox with known problematic sites through a blacklist and you can add more sites to that list.
useragent switcher, i think under enhancements http://kmext.sf.net

2 known sites that do require a css fix are facebook albums and youtube, please see those threads:

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,107620

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,106828

some wordpress websites using a certain template can use the same css fix universally e.g wattsupwiththat.com and jonls.dk...the wordpress bug is very easy to detect as the page content breaks from the main div and displays to the right..this fix can be used for all wordpress sites with that problem

@-moz-document url-prefix(http://wattsupwiththat.com/)
,url-prefix(http://www.wattsupwiththat.com/)
,url-prefix(http://jonls.dk/)
{
#main{margin-left:-960px!important;position:inherit!important;z-index:-1!important}
}

when encountered add url-prefix(http://examplebadsite.wordpress.com) inside the same css

please note.. this is not a bug in the rendering of gecko 1.8 even if gecko 1.9 displays better. if can be fixed with a css=bad website code. those problems aren't due to code using css 3 or special transitions that specifically require gecko 1.9 or the latest webkit engine, otherwise those sites will not be fixable with a simple css code and they won't even render in internet explorer. the issue here is that gecko 1.9.x and especially after 1.9.1, it has become much more tolerant towards bad codes, specifically trident(ie) non-standard code.. so while microsoft has updated trident 4 to be more standard compliant than before, gecko has also met them halfway by tolerating what used to be unacceptable coding rubbish.

lazy web developers like in pureprofile (or drug addicts working for facebook) instead of properly coding the website without errors, they simply test the website on ie and latest firefox and if it works, to them that means it's alright but actually what they have done is make a very poor code that is non-standard mshtml and gecko 1.9.x tolerates it and renders it without complaining. gecko 1.8 on the other hand is fussy and does not like any non standard code and as soon as it sees ie code it immediately displays a yellow card.

so you see..those new problematic websites are because web developers are getting lazy fixing errors and if it works on the latest gecko..then it's fine by them but gecko 1.8 is strict with standards and won't tolerate their mess..some actually see that as an advantage.

p.s you can use the stylish extension to add those fixes, just create a new style in stylish..call it fixes and add all those code there. the advantage of stylish over usercontent.css is you can easily edit the style without messing usercontent and using stylish, the css becomes effective at once ..just reload the page and doesn't reuire a browser restart like usercontent.css

stylish extension can be downloaded from kmext.sourceforge.net (either under enhancements or development)

Thanks for that valuable information disrupted, i didn't think it was a universal code, but, i had to ask on the off-chance it may have been.

I have taken your advice and downloaded both the stylish extension, and the autoswitcher agent extension, however, i am a little stuck. I have extracted them to a folder that i have simply name "KM Extensions", but, am stuck on how to actually install them....or is it as simple as just extracting them to the folder in which KM has been installed?

I use facebook a fair bit, as i am an admin at a group there, and my partner is trying to code a game/app for the site as a side project, however, i have noticed that most of the website seems to run smoothly, except for a few small bugs. These being, i can only post on someones wall as a comment rather than direct to their wall (not a biggy, unless i am making an admin post), and a very small amount of applications that do not display properly,or have buttons/links that become unclickable.

This isn't a major concern, just a slight inconvenience, so far those are the only pages that are having hissy fits...though if i look hard enough at the userstyles.org web site, i *may* get lucky and find something that will work.

the facebook wall writing problem is due that facebook does not detect gecko browsers and only sniffs for firefox..this can be fixed by switchting ua to firefox (tools>user agent>firefox)

to install the extension, simply extract the 7z package right into kmeleon's root installation folder, so all files are extracted in their corresponding default folders in kmeleon or the folder will be created if it doesn't exist

please see extensions faq
http://kmext.sourceforge.net/help.htm

somes extensions like styliish, contain component files, this requires that after installing, 2 files have to be deleted so the component will be registered.. those 2 files are:
compreg.dat
xpti.dat
they are located in kmeleon\components folder

there's also an extension manager which makes it easy to install and unistall extensions and auto registers components
http://kmext.sourceforge.net/kem.htm

when you download an extension, there will be an entry under its description 'menu entry' or toolbar button if applicable..this will show you how to access or trigger the extension from kmeleon's menu
