Why is K-meleon incompatible with the standard history file of Gecko ("history.dat" in the profile directory) used by Mozilla and Firefox?

because we use the older leaner system. (All official issues)
if You need a k-m to read history dat use w-b 0.8.2+.
or any that has brocken history.
there is an independent history.jar 4 those based on GRE 1.8.x.

Where do I download the version of K-Meleon that uses GRE 1.8.x?

The thread
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=24923&t=24923
gives you several download links to K-Meleon updated to 1.7.8 final
at the bottom of the page in messages later than 11/may/2005.

Hao Jiang released a "May Day" build using GRE 1.8.b2 on May 1st. It is a good build. It was very experimental, but it worked very well.
However, I don't use history at all. You might want to ask Hao whether that build works for history or not. I think some of his do; some don't.

I was not exact in giving my information.
Carson is right. If you are looking for a 1.8.x build, take Hao's
CCFMay Special version.
I think the history is not yet working.
I only succeeded having a history.xul embedding K-Meleon
in a complete Mozilla 1.8b2 build using Mozillas complete
chrome and component folders.

@Fred i send You a updated w-b chrome..
Hao uses updated version of that if he uses smaller chrome.
chrome of 1.8.x are compatible to each of the the 1.8.x builts.

I have made a new version using Mozilla 1.8b2 nightly
which has history in xul. You can download it at :

@ Guenter
Your chrome was very helpful. It has history in history jar and
is much smaller than the Mozilla chrome. I have upx-ed the
components and everything seems to work. Thank you again.

Fred,
Which exe file do you use in this 1.8b2 nightly build? I am very interested.

@ Hao
I have used your small k-meleon.exe ( 81 kb), for which I thank
you very much. Without it I couldn't have done it. I used Guenter's
chrome with history.jar. The components folder is from Mozilla
nightly, without changes, because it would not work without some
files, which I can't define. UPX helped to make the folder smaller.
I hope that everything works ok.

Fred, you are welcome. But I have to say this exe file is VERY experimental and have many problems. So be cautious when using it. I am planning to make a better one when I get time. Thank you for your version.

i have file list of xpt from early statik and also file list of what i think isfrom/of latest dynamacic w-b - would that be of any worth? -
hab also datei listen von von mir gesammelten w-b gemacht - falls ihr die wegen componets selktieren braucht?
History in w-b possibly did not work becuase at that time it was not known tah certain files dirupt history collecting.

@ Guenter
Nochmals vielen Dank
Fred

For the modified version, "history.dat" does work, but they never appear in the address bar...

For the modified versions, "history.dat" does work, but they never appear in the address bar. To comfirm, copy "history.dat" from your Mozilla or Firefox profile directory to the K-Meleon profile directory.

Currently, K-Meleon stores history in "pref.js". I think this is bad, because that file will get larger as you type more URL's. The history currently doesn't even affect links in a page.

K-Meleon does not store history in pref.js, but in history.txt, in the
usual versions, or in history.dat, in K-Meleon0.9-1.8b2-modified.
The URLs you see in prefs.js are from the drop-down menu in
the address-bar, what you typed in the address-bar. They are restricted
to 16, or 0 or any small number you set. The real history is in
history.dat or .txt. You can recall it by Ctrl + H. The versions with
history.txt have a privacy plug-in that can be set to delete history
every time you close the browser. This is not yet possible in my new
version. You have to go to Ctrl + H and delete them manually by
select all/delete. What you probably miss is auto-complete of
addresses in the address-bar, but that is not yet implemented in the
browser and a task for a coming browser generation. However, in the
usual versions with history.txt you can call history and write some
starting letters into the upper edge of the box (not into the box),
and it will highlight the address(folder) in the history box.You can
then click on the folder and the single addresses open. Highlight
it and press enter to go to the address. So this is quite easy.
This search function does not yet work in my new version.
