I think the icons in the bookmarks toolbar are using to much space is it possible to remove them in some way?

You can simply rename bookmarks.bmp in your skin folder,
to bookmarks-renamed.bmp for example. After a restart you will just have
the background with the bookmarks names of your toolbar folder.
An other possibility is it, to create subfolders in the toolbar folder,
when you click on them in the bookmarks toolbar, you get a kind
of dropdown menu with the bookmarks in the subfolders.

Disable the bitmapped menus plugin in Edit-Preferences-Plugins - but it just removes the icons - the space where the icon was is still there!
