I have kind of an interesting situation, I never have run across.

When I go to my URL bar and type in the letter "A" (without quotes) the browser crashes. Now I can type in any other letter and I get a drop down box of all the previous sites I have visited.

But when I type "A" the browswer crashes.

My first thought was the first site in the list, that begins with an "A" is causing the crash. But how do you clear the URL bar?

I went o Tools -> Privacy -> Clear Data -> Clear URL bar history, but nothing is cleared. All the drop down sites are still listed.

So I went to F2 -> General -> and tried to make the maximum height of URL bar 0 but it wouldn't let me. So I made it 1

Then also in F2, I went to Url Bar History and changed it to 1 and restarted browser and while my drop down box is now one entry, every time I type in the letter "A" (without quotes) the browser crashes.

Any ideas??

I am running Windows Vista sp2

That's a kinda weird thing that happened to a few others before, although for each with another character! Crazy. First assumed it were beta-related, but then it happened even on KM154! Am not sure if anyone found a reason or solution yet, think rather not, at least I can't remember...

Funnily, those two were germans, no idea if the system language has any influence. And one of them responded awhile later, that just as mysteriously as it had started, it had stopped again!! Out of the blue, so, still no clue... ;-)

It doesn't really "crash", does it? Or is there a "crash restore" when restarting afterwards? If I understood it right, the others described it like a normal browser shutdown.
But hard to figure it out, if it only happens on the computers of a few other people, who don't do much experimenting :-/
Perhaps related to some plugin or whatever??

Regarding URL bar history, yes, I think there's a know bug in 1.6beta that clearing doesn't work yet.
For testing you can delete the entries manually, they are visible in about:config after filtering "mru" (most recently used). Probably too many, so the better way is to shutdown the browser, open prefs.js in profile folder with notepad, and delete the MRU entries there.

The autocomplete feature can also include all history pages, not only the "typed" ones, but you probably noticed that setting already in the prefs...

Here it quits without warning and
shows crash restore on next start.

I have one configuration with that bug.
It always quits KM instantly on p of http.
After a few craches http works again, but
now it quits on g.
Problem is reproducible with KM 1.6b2 / KM 1.7 and
CVS binary.

I'm still busy with better favicons.
Added code for browser.chrome.site_icons
like in FF. KM never used that pref-option.

Did that get fixed in beta 2? I am using 1.6.0 beta2 and I just cleared my URL bar history from the Tools menu. I specifically cleared the URL bar history. I did not do the clear all.

i never had a problem in clearin url bar history whether in the betas or alpha4 which i'm using. the clear history is the one that doesn't work

Alpha4's package contains the same
K-Meleon.exe that comes with beta2.

Alpha4 with bug-config quits on 'g' too.
Autocomplete types google.com/ before KM quits.

Have you tried to set accessibility.typeaheadfind.autostart to false ?
Not sure this pref is the one to modify ...
It also looks like the shortcut we used thers is a long time in URL bar, but I don't remember the way to remove it ...

Found another bug with this configuration:

If kmeleon.favicons.show is set to false.

On start of of about:config using the menu:
Edit/Configuration/Browser Configuration

There is no crash if config is started from url bar.

I can see favicons, so I guess I have them enabled. Most of this thread is over my head so I don't want to mess with the settings unless I have simple instructions.

My browser does crash but then upon restart it says "retore" and it goes back to where it left off

Looks like an overflow problem in urlbar.cpp.
It requires browsers with large history to reproduce.

AddString(A2CT(results->value)); // was executed several thousand times.
if(i>3500) break; // fix to prevent quiet crash.

You can't test it without history.
It may take a few hours to get 20000 history entries.
You need 3900 entries starting with 'g' to reproduce this.

I have 28 lines for drop-down list.
user_pref("kmeleon.urlbar.dropdown_lines", 28);

If there are more than 28 history entries,
the list has a scroll bar.

I didn't count each value in the list,
but the scroll button is very small if
using the crash config.

The loop I've limited to 3800 entries is
limiting the length of the filtered list.
Tested with small and big values.
K-Meleon has no preference value for it.

If you do not type a in 'g' to filter the list,
a limited list with FavIcons is shown.
It is limited by this value with a maximum of 999:
user_pref("kmeleon.MRU.maxURLs", 999);

I guess that is the value you had in mind.

WOW, not something I'd ever have guessed (being not a programmer;-)
Frankly, never would have imagined either that a user could have sooooo many entries :O
If you say the solution works, it would be helpful to post it in the beta-thread and bug-tracker, guess there's already an entry for that bug somewhere...
Thinking about it, does the limit depend from KM only or perhaps also from the computer specs, how many a specific machine can hold? (perhaps limited by RAM or such?)

to 9999 days and watch it growing.

My test-environment has 14.6 MB (15,408,755 bytes).

Can't remember having read anything about editing history, so no clue. Some of the other folks here know a lot more about such stuff

I looked for something to work with history one time. That was 12-24 months ago. I did not find anything that I could use. I did come across this program. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mozilla_history_view.html

I think it is read only.

The only time that I have used history was for SearchH http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/KmmSearchH

Then I just read the history.dat as a flat file.

Soon KM will go to sqlite and there will be many tools which can help.
