Set Default Browser & KMVX

Hi there,

i am using K-meleon 1.1 with KMVX so that the profiles are in the K-meleon folder. But when i double-click on a html file, the normal K-meleon exe is started and a new profile is automatically created in the AppData folder. So, my question is how to open html file with KMVX?

Thank you

SetDefault.exe makes default browser from the file named k-meleon.exe in the folder where Setdefault was started. So You could name the KMVX version k-meleon.exe and start Setdefault in the same folder.

Alternatively You can right click on a html file open properties dialogue and set Windows default handler to the exe file You want.

p. s. A used k-meleon profile folder in Apdata is started when no file called profile.ini is present in the k-meleon install folder. An (empty or used) folder in Apdata is always created when xpcom_core.dll has imports from msvcr71.dll instead of msvcrt.dll.

AFAIK KMVX is meant to be used when km resides on a writeable removable medium like a USB stick or a Zip/Jaz disk. In such a case you would never set km as the default browser. Since you've done that, I guess you've installed km on your hard drive and just want to have your profile in the km directory? You don't need any additional tools for that! Place a profile.ini (text file) in the km root folder:

[profile]
path=Profiles
IsRelative=1

An empty profile.ini has the same effect.

path specifies the path to the folder which contains your profile(s). If IsRelative is set to 1, path is taken relative to the km root folder. Otherwise path must be a fully qualified path.

@guenter: AFAIK KMVX.exe is meant to run k-meleon.exe. So, it can't replace k-meleon.exe. Or am I wrong?

If you want to use different versions (which do not use the
same k-meleon.exe, but a different k-meleon.exe in a separate folder,
which may even have a different name, but is not pointing to another
k-meleon.exe outside), to open a html or htm file, you can always
add an additional "open with" in the right click menu,
as Guenter suggests as the second possibility.
To add such a menu entry, you should do that as an administrator,
not as a simple user. Most people surf anyhow with an
administrator status, although this is less safe, if not in your case,
you have to log out from your user account and log in with your
administrator account, possibly with an existing keyword.
You can then open an Explorer window and should find in the
top menu of it an entry "Extras" between Favorites and "?".
This may have a different name in english Windows versions.
I have a german version here.
You will find a dropdown submenu called "folder options" or alike,
and in that a tab "file types".
Look in the list for the file type "HTML"
and click on it.
You will see a button "extended" or similar at the bottom.
Click on that and add with the button "New" a menu entry called
Open with K-Meleon-NX or similar.
Search the path to the program with the search button
and do the same procedure for HTM files afterwards.
If you want to open html/htm files with this version only,
with a doubleclick, you can edit the values for
the existing entry "open" instead.
You should find afterwards the changed points in your right
click menu.

thanks everyone for the suggestions but kko's solution is the one i was looking for. smiling smiley btw, associating html files to KMVX.exe will only return an error when you double-click a html file.
