I want to be able to click a link and open it in a new tab in the background. In other words open the new tab without having it come in focus. How can i do this?

In K-Meleon 1.1 you have 3 methods or configs for mouse accelerates:
Tools -> Mouse Accelerates

1) Default: open links in background with Ctrl+RigthClick

2) Firefox 2.0: open links in background with MiddleClick

3) SeaMonkey 1.1: open links in background with MiddleClick

Or you can do RigthClick and select "Open in background layer" option.
