How Many Windows 98 Users Are There Here?
Posted by: Windows 98 Supporter

Please let us know if you are or ever have been a Windows 98
user. Just kidding. The primary interest is if you currently use
Windows 98. It seems that since microsoft has abandoned us
we are getting more support than ever. Please see the following:
http://www.bpa23.host.sk/98ALIVE.TXT

Everyone have a great Windows 98 day

Yup, me too, I shamelessly admit. I use 98SE seriously tweaked with 98lite and an alternative SP, and it works like a dream for everything I need it for. My 350MHz 64MB laptop just coasts along. I have a main machine with 2k on and plenty of RAM for stuff that this baby can't manage. I have no intention whatsoever of using XP, even if you paid me, and as for Vista....<rolls eyes>...glad there are still many of us nutters aroundgrinning smiley. (Note - I got an 'access denied' message when I tried the link)

At least 14 old laptops and uncounted number of PCs have beem brought back to useful state by me in the past few years with help from Windows 98SE plus various unofficial updates and service packs. W98SE with WinME files runs great on old crapsters... although lately I install mostly Win2000 since most of older machines nowadays is powerful enough to run it, occasionally I still get some sub-specs laptop that can be revived to usefulness only with Win98. So, yeah, old DOS with GUI is still alive and well over here :-?

98 lives! Yesh! I tweak, rock, and roll out the good times on an emachine that was given up for dead a few years ago. As long as I can run the GIMP I'm happy.

XP has so d*mn much attitude it would take me a month to hack it into shape ;-)

An all in one upgrade pack would be nice there are so many 98se things mentioned on mfsn forum I find it confusing
I don't know what to try beyond the unofficial service pack which is quite old now.

I abuse Pretty Pictures 98 (2nd Ed) religiously, & I got a 98Lite & know how to use it. If I can ever locate my 95 OSR2 disk, I'll dig that out, turn 98Lite loose again, & really make a mutant out of my computer!

ƒallis Maximµs - try to google the files You need.

EXPLORER.EXE
SHELL32.DLL
COMDLG32.DLL

All three files should have version numbers in the form 4.00.XXXX

(NOT 4.72.XXXX or later)

there are web pages that offer dll for download. If they are not language specific?
Ican have a look at my win95 diskette version :-)) maybe i find them.

Guenter,

Why the 4.00xxx versions? I ask because I have 4.72.3612.1700 for explorer.exe

faster: because they support less features and therefore need less code.
But we may need the newer version for k-m - i am not sure about it.

// some ppl with 98lite use the 4.00xxx versions to make the micro install faster
- the version nr. is mentioend in their docu file 98manual.txt or so.

quote:
if you intend installing 98micro or 98lite with the higher
performance and lighter weight Windows 95 Explorer Shell
desktop option (called the SLEEK desktop option in the
installer) you will also need to copy the following three
Windows 95 files to the setup files directory:

These need to come from an original Windows 95 CDROM; 95a, or
95b -- Windows 95c has integrated IE4 so files from 95c are
not compatible. All three files should have version numbers in
the form 4.00.XXXX (NOT 4.72.XXXX or later) in the file
properties dialog

Guenter,

Ah, since I don't have any Windows 95 disks around, I can pass on this one. It is an option I have heard about before, but haven't pursued.

98Lite or 98 Micro is another story. I ran 98lite some time ago and decided it was overkill for my needs, so went back to a regular install of Windows 98se, later adding on the unofficial 2.1a pack.

Tks,

N

With my ME it is better to reduce bulk by using 98lite to have a sleeker install.
Plus i do not want all the blessing that MS wants to install: e. g. Outlook so
it has become a regular procedure to use 98lite with all installs i do for myself
( - but i have not exchanged the dll in the current installation).

Hey everybody. I know that ALL of you want to try the latest version
of this above http://www.bpa23.host.sk/wupg.html
This newest has come out since the last post here.
I had been using this and the unofficial service packs by exuberant
on all my computers. I\'ve installed both on all since either
first came out. They work better with both installed.

However I have NEVER seen anything like this new one.
After installing it over all the older versions on this computer
it takes off on the internet like a ROCKET.

Still using 98SE/Lite, on machines from a 10 year old 120mHz IBM 760EL laptop to a newish (for me ;-) Athlon XP2100. With a few tweaks, it still does everything I need to do. If / when the time comes that it won't, I'll load up Debian and try that road. Neither XP nor Vista nor any other leased, home-phoning MS OS will ever enter my house or my disk drives.

KM is an outstanding companion for 98SE.

I use three main computers: Thinkpad with 98 SE, Satellite with 2000 and Dimension with Xp. I love Windows 98 because once you tweak it--it works perfect. Although a tweaked 98 is a great OS...I feel 2000 may be better.

I use Windows 95 OSR 2.5 since mid-'98. It still does everything I need it to do, which is mostly surfing the Internet these days. Since a couple months, this machine is IE-free, thanks to Toasty Tech's guide. I use SeaMonkey as my all-in-one Internet solution, though K-Meleon 1.0 definitely got my interest!

My new computer will run Windows 98 SE. I already have the disc.

As some of you might be aware of, Gecko 1.9 will NOT be compatible with Windows 9x, mainly due to the use of Cairo as the graphics engine. This is bound to have an effect on K-Meleon as well, assuming that K-Meleon will want to use Gecko 1.9 at some point in the future. In such case, K-Meleon would no longer function on Windows 9x.

Please see the following for reference:

Is there anyone around here with programming capabilities who could contribute to writing the code for a wrapper that would implement missing Windows 9x APIs and thus enable Cairo to be used with Windows 9x? If anyone is interested, it will be good to get a project going on soon. I also posted about this on the Windows 95/98/ME forums over at www.msfn.org some time ago.

I have two machines that are old enough and slow enough that anything more current than Win98 is not practical. So, I use a fully updated Win98SE, with what tweaks I need to get things to move.

And so I downloaded K-Meleon as an alternative to FireFox, and with a few configuration options engaged, it runs surprisingly quickly, even on my IBM 560 notebook running a P1 at 166.

Nicely done. Several of my colleagues have been turned on to K-Meleon as well, because they've been unmoved to step into the XP morass. Also each running 98SE.

Wow. What a day (and night). Had a horrendous crash in W98se, and my backup refused to work. Tried everything short of fdisk/format. Could not get W98se up and running again. Went for a dual boot of W2000 and W98se, keeping my FAT32. That works. I'm afraid my days of W98se are ended and ina spectacular fashion. Now if anyone knows how to kill off the old C:\windows folders and config info I would appreciate (since it doesn't work anyhow).

I have been dragged, kicking and screaming into W2000 and think after this last crash that I'm here to stay.

<very big sigh>

I do. I'm an 18-year Unix and GNU/Linux sysadmin, but I keep a Toshiba Satellite 2540cds laptop (AMD K6-II/333 w/96MB RAM and a 4.6GB drive) for one, and one purpose only: running my copy of Steven's Creek Software's "The Athlete's Diary".

I was never a jock, back in high school, and ten years ago I began exercising on a regular basis. As a sufficiently anal systems administrator, I intuitively knew that I had to keep an ongoing (yearly) record of what I did (or failed to do) vis-a-vis regular exercise on a day-to-day basis.

My homepage -- www.horen.org.il -- carries the records, year-by-year, day-by-day, of every kilometer I've walked, jogged, run, and rowed; every mile I've covered on an elliptical trainer, and every weight-lifting session.

With my GNU/Linux boxen (a no-name tower I built, and a used Toshiba Tecra 8100 I bought on eBay), I keep-up with bleeding-edge Fedora Core releases (currently FC/5), but this laptop stays at Windows 98SE (I also have an English/Hebrew version, since I spent 25 years in Israel), but I now rely on the Hebrew support in GNU/Linux, so my Windows 98SE installation remains staunchly Anglo (American-style).

I found Firefox/1.5.0.6 to be way too resource-heavy and time-consuming for this low-end laptop, but K-Meleon/1.0 flies like a rocket.

Sure I could install Win4Lin or VMware on my GNU/Linux boxen (and used to do just that), but Win4Lin/9x is no longer being actively maintained (no kernel support after the 2.6.12.x-series), and VMware is just over-featured and over-priced for my needs. So, it's a Toshiba Satellite 2540cds running Windows 98SE, for me.

Thanks for asking.
