i particularly like the way one ugly little magenta bitmap can make dead buttons completely vanish... i've always wanted to do that (cackle, cackle...).

interesting, though, that if you specify a "dead" image for the 'stop' button, it also affects the forward and back arrows (and maybe the others, too... it's hard to tell, since they never become disabled).

You can't specity a dead image for just one button, you'll have to create a dead image for all of the buttons.
