Last night it crashed and I lost everything. Couldn't salvage anything I backed up or from my other partition. Fixing it as we speak

You could try rescuing data using knoppix live cd

It's pretty simple to do - no linux knowledge required - as long as you have another drive to copy data onto

burn the iso onto a cd , you don't require the dvd version simply for reescuing data.
Then load the cd

External drive's icon will appear on the Knoppix desktop or browse to hda1 etc
Click external drive icon to mount the drive
Then Right click and select change the external drive's properties from read only to write.
Then copy files onto external HD.

Thanks arrow but I just reformatted . I couldn't access it I tried wtih Damn Small Linux and it wouldn't even boot it was that far gone . Put Windows 2000 on it and it runs better then with xp. My old girl(desktop) is 11 years old.

If you were me would you make a media partition? Just incase it would happen again I would atleast have the partition?

I have 15 years old 386 ( it was a gift) in my attic. Works just fine.
