KM 1.6 beta

Howdy, Folks.

Been giving KM 1.6 beta a run for it's money on a new a 64bit machine with Windows 8 (which I HATE! In fact I'm thinking about tossing Windows 8 out the window.:madsmiling smiley I'm using ClassicShellSetup_3_6_6 but still the Start/Modern screen comes back occasionally, maybe I just need to keep experimenting with the settings. Frankly, I think MS took a perfectly simple and efficient line of OS's and turned it into a big PITA, especially when they licensed OEM's to pre-install Window 8 on desktops.

I've been running KM 1.6 beta with default settings. I had some problems with it crashing often but it seems this crashing may have had something to do with Google Chrome being installed on the machine. I downloaded and installed Chrome from several different sources but KM 1.6 beta kept crashing. Like FF on my machines, Chrome kept stealing default status and screwing-up file associations and each time I would uninstall it I had to do a system restoration to fix the problems as changing settings and even running sfc /scannow didn't help. The last time I uninstalled Chrome I even lost IE 10. FF had caused much the same problems on three different machines with different OS's. I guess these big name-browsers just hate me or some kind of setting I use. Anyway, with KM and IE I can do without the browsers.

I'm, going to start customizing 1.6 beta and I am wondering if there is a way to tell what macros will work with 1.6 beta w/o using trial and error. Anyone got the 411 on this?

Thank you.

Charlie

Hi Charlie ... I don't have any answers to your Windows 8 problems, I'm still on Windows XP. Hope someone will post some help or ideas. I was thinking of offering this suggestion concerning Firefox, which may not be of any help. Was wondering what version of Firefox you were using ... I use the portable version which of course doesn't have to be installed, just sitting there in it's own little folder. Maybe you are already using that version.

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

... I have been using the Firefox ESR Portable version.

Mozilla Firefox ESR, Portable

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox-portable-esr

... just an idea but it may not be of any help to you.

Charlie

You did not say which 1.6 that you were using. I do not have chrome, firefox, or Win8 but my beta 2.5 of KM 1.6.0 is very stable on Win7 (32 bit).

Most macros will run with 1.6 versions. If you have a specific one that you are not sure about, just ask here.

Thanks, duffy98

I probably haven't tried any of the most recent versions of FF but I've gotten to the point that I tend to shy away from FF except when using someone else's machine that happens to have FF on it. I'm kind of the same way about Google Chrome even though it seems to get some rave reviews.

I'm using K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2. Is there much difference between K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2 and K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2dot5_en-US?

Sorry I am still on Win 7 / 64 bit and XP pro 32 bit.

I assume that You must make sure that You have writing rights.
Check whether You can create bookmarks etc.
There might be a some software running to protect You. sad smiley

That is what happened on my Win 7 machine. A guest clicked away the warning that the protection software did not know this K-Meleon update. Next thing all guests complained about lost bookmarks, start pages that did not stick for them...

The software had put K-Meleon into a sandbox.

p.s. On my old XP machine I also have the "feature" that it forgets that I want classic looks.

I'm using K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2. Is there much difference between K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2 and K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2dot5_en-US?

Charlie

It has a newer Gecko engine. Privacy DLL was re-compiled and all of it works. Spell checking is fully integrated. There is a troubleshooting item in the help menu to verify if you have write permission to your profile.

@ guenter / JamesD

I didn't realize that 32 bit OS's could be run on a 64 bit machine :O, good to know. I saved the HDD and it's contents from the xp machine. I will plan on installing it on this new 64 bit machine. Actually, I may have the Geek Squad or some one install it for me as I understand that OEM XP's tend to have problems when installed in a different machine or a machine with a different MB. That alone may well may make me a much happier camper.

I'll replace KM 1.6.2 beta with K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2dot5_en-US and give it a run for it's money.

With very new machines You got to make sure You have all the XP drivers before You start. They drivers might be unavailable for XP.

You better have a Geek squad. Creating dual boot for Windows 7 or higher and XP might be tricky. I have not tried it. XP 32 bit can not address and recognize the 8 GB RAM on my Windows 7 machine. But my XP 32 bit sure runs on a old AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-56 that was designed for Vista.

The how 2 is double Dutch to me.

Thank you, guenter.

I think I may see if they can install the actual HHD with the XP and files in this new machine so it will have it's own HHD.

BTW, I've been using K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2dot5_en-US a couple of days now and it seems to be more responsive and stable than the previous KM's.
