Just overwriting the new bookmarks. As always with a previous backup.

Yeh I know, but that didnt work. Ive copied the old bookmarks file to the profiles directory, yet the program will not read it and instead the program is creating a new bookmarks file which I cannot locate and replace. My problems started in an earlier post with a computer lockup and K meleon lost all my setting in a profile switch up...which makes no sense whats so ever...I loaded the new version and am trying to migrate the files...with no success.

frustrated...

thanks

An intact bookmarks file is a html file that keeps a list. look into Yours - there is one that is in setup dir ./defaults ... That is the file that is used to start a new profile. It is normally not damaged so that You can compare.

As i wrote in a previous post - you have won when only the ini is damaged.

Check whether bookmarks.html and bookmarks_bachup.html can be opened by a browser as normal html file - and how they look. As stated above You work with or keep backups.

If one of the files looks normal You name it bookmarks.html... place them in used profile. And You recourse , repeat tests to try to find the reason or an unbroken file.

Bookmarks.html can be damaged. That is why K-Meleon keeps a backup file automatically. Only if both file and backup are damaged at the same scandisk run, You loose all bookmarks. After that You can still try to rescue manually (as long as an editor openes the files) if You think it is worth it.

Edit -> Configuration -> Profile Directory
and overwrite here bookmarks.html file with your old bookmarks.html file.

Also you can change the bookmarks.html path in Bookmarks -> Options ...

Just what guenter said then (I think isn't all corrupted).

Backup/delete/rename the bookmarks.html and copy there the bookmarks_backup.html file renaming it to bookmarks.html.

The bookmarks.html file is empty when opened in any browser.
It has a size of 189 kb but there is nothing contained in it, or the bookmarks backup file.

so I assume they were both corrupted somehow..?

Thanks

Bad news!
Guess You searched all possible locations in user %apdata% subfolder K-Meleon or Mozilla (if You use hand updated with Seamonkey files) and such?

Did you also inspect the found files with an editor - e.g. notepad?
If even this is empty or does stop without much ... - info, all is gone.

Info might be in the files created by scandisk.
You would search after short strings from the bookmarks header.
That are before the data.

<!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
<!-- Generated By KMeleon -->
<!-- This is an automatically generated file.
It will be read and overwritten.
Do Not Edit! -->

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
<TITLE>Bookmarks</TITLE>
<H1>Bookmarks</H1>

<DL><p>
<DT><H3 PERSONAL_TOOLBAR_FOLDER="true" ID="NCtongue sticking out smileyersonalToolbarFolder" ADD_DATE="0">Personal Toolbar Folder</H3>
<DL><p>

Then come data structures (mine contain banned items - forum does not accept them)

They are the lines of a data list with info.

The bookmark lines start with: <DT><A

The list ends/is terminated with

</DL><p>

If You find complete data lines in scandisk files You can insert them in such a frame.

Else You make the browser jump to the places by extracting and inserting the links into the url bar and bookmark them new.

A lot of work. Worth it?

This is how K-Meleon as browser sees the beginning of a new normal bookmarks file.
