Re: Anyone still using kmeleon?

Hi,

My computer died, so I had to temporarily use my old P-3 Celeron 1Ghz 512Mb RAM desktop running Windows XP. Looked around for a browser that would support my old machine and none did, except K-meleon.

I thought I'd use K-meleon for a day or two before I get myself a new PC. However, I fell in love with the browser right from the word go. It is so versatile and convenient and fun to use. I had used Opera browser before and had to put up with problems playing audio on some sites. To my amazement, K-meleon plays all online audio that Opera wouldn't!

Part of the reason I had liked Opera was that it had a feature that helped circumvent censorship and site blocking. Again to my amazement, K-meleon makes circumventing site blocking a breeze.

I especially like the easy and convenient way to enable and disable. at will, Javascript, Popups an Images. It makes browsing lightnening fast even with old machines like mine.

K-meleon works on my old desktop so well, that I've postponed buying a new PC for now. K-meleon does a great job and I don't feel any urgency to rush and buy a new machine.

In fact, I like K-meleon so much, that I think I will stick with it and use it as my default browser even when I get a new PC.

Thanks to the K-meleon developer! To create a browser that, in my humble opinion, is better than the likes of Opera and Google Chrome is simply mind boggling! You are God!

I do agree 100%, since I detected KM one year ago it became my main browser on all of my machines (WinXp - Win10, Linux). It's lean, fast and handy to use. Great job, thanks to the developpers!

What a pleasant surprise. I'm using K-Meleon 76 RC and it is so responsive, most other browsers have become laggy on this notebook hardware.

I discovered K-Meleon two years ago after giving up on Internet Explorer, and KM has been my choice ever since then. It's stable, super fast and can be extensively customized without having to install large extensions that hog resources.

Meanwhile I've tried a few other browsers, including Firefox, Pale Moon and a couple of Chrome clones. I wasn't happy with any of them, but have kept one of the Chrome clones available in case of sites that KM can't handle. However, so far I've only run across one site like that, and it's not important enough to even worry about, so I often find myself wondering if I really need to keep the alternate browser. When a site stops working properly it's often because of some crappy JavaScript code. I can't be bothered with sites that make themselves incompatible with a perfectly good browser that complies with web standards.

Hi Folks,
I just can't say enough about the KM browser. Sometimes I think it should be called the "Happy People Browser".smiling smiley

Think about all the terrific Pros of KM.
The mere fact that the developers take the time to painstakenly make this browser super terrific for us and the help that is provided to us by them and others when a problem arises is just a wonderful thing.

Very important is the fact that this browser is still being updated for older
operating systems and as each day goes by, the folks around the world are going
to discover and find out just how terrific KM is.

Take care winking smiley

I recently found K-Meleon while looking for a lightweight browser to use while gaming. This browser takes the smallest amount of resouces that I have found in any broswer. This is my go-to browser for most things now. There are a few sites that will not load with this, such as twitch.tv, but other than that, I use this for most web-browsing. Thanks to K-Meleon for making this smiling smiley

At least one dozen of my friends and family are using KMeleon 76RCpro by Rodocop. They all have both a compressed file with my settings and a folder with KM, so when something goes wrong they easily replace the old folder with a new folder. Easy installation ever with no problem at all. By the way, I have found that KMeleon is voted number 6 of 12 "Updated web browsers for Windows XP", and I have also found a comment or review by Rodocop from January 2014 that makes me happy today. smiling smiley

Just revived an old Socket A Sempron machine and installed XP.
It was a nightmare to get ANY browser that would work on XP.
K-meleon is the only one that runs well and displays everything fine.
Most browsers refuse to start at all without an SSE2 capable processor.
Is development still being performed?
Downloading it on the same machine was the tricky part... because
IE8 doesn't work well with SourceForge... :-o

Cool smiling smiley

Dear Sir,

I (still) use this browser from time to time...
Have many history links (cache) in Comodo Dragon (Chrome/Chromium derivative) so
started developing application (in Lazarus/FreePascal) to access local "History" SQlite database to delete oh-so-many unneeded links (local history database is cca 100mb big).
I'm almost finished, but had this idea - to link my app to K-Meleon - to open wanted link in K-Meleon to check current database/listing.
I can include K-Meleon in my app (ZIP) or provide link.
What are your thoughts?

Best regards,
Alan

I am a computer repairman and web developer. I have been using KMeleon for years. Until now, I was using version 1.5.4 for testing only. Today I installed KMeleon 75.1 also. The difference is huge. And the browser has many new features that make it very handy. I might even start using it as my primary browser, because I really like it! I like that it is possible to disable Java, JavaScript, Cookies, Images, Popups. And that tool appears right in front of me on the toolbar. That is so cool!

Here is the memory usage of various browsers when viewing this page:

14 MB - Internet Explorer 6
17 MB - Opera 7
19 MB - KMeleon 1.5.4
45 MB - Safari 5.1.7
61 MB - KMeleon 75.1
84 MB - Google Chrome 43
147 MB - Mozilla Firefox 52.5
199 MB - QupZilla 1.8.6

My computer is a Dell Dimension with 3GHz Intel processor, 2.5GB RAM, running 32-bit Windows XP PRO SP2.

The reason why I use WinXP is because it is light and FAST, and performance is a big issue for me. I am always on the lookout for programs which are efficient. So far KMeleon tops that list. I don't really use IE6 or Safari or Opera. I only use them to test websites to make sure that my sites work on all browsers. I hate when a website says, "Sorry, your browser is not supported by this website. You need to install the latest version of Google Chrome to view this page." LOL

I like Safari 5.1.7 and IE6. But they are so old and outdated. There are a whole lot of CSS and JavaScript features that are not supported in IE6. And most HTTPS sites don't load at all in Safari and IE6, so I think, they are almost dead.

Well, I have literally discovered its existence today. I've installed it, and have a blank screen with command line. If I put in an address, it is FAST, and the presentation of the sites is clean, much better than in the other browsers I use. And I knew to go to Duckduck.

But how do I get in to anything else? Tabs ? Menus - I can't do anything re skins, which may be the root of my limitations, without access to menus ?
Am I mistaking what K-Meleon is? If it is a 'build your own browser' kit, that's beyond what I'm inclined to do. I can see myself using it for the places I go regularly, where I know the address. I would still have to use something more conventional for more open-ended searches, where you need to use multple tabs and returns.

Is there an idiot's guide? Prompt list of keystrokes ?

Sincerely

@Ian Graham
Your main error is that your version is not specified.
And versions for ~18 years of existence (since 2000) created a lot.
...
Try this (latest) version: https://o.rthost.win/kmeleon/KM-Goanna-20180526.7z (~33 Mcool smiley
You just need to unzip archive, nothing to install. There should be no problems with interface.

LOL! grinning smiley No, it's a perfectly normal, slightly oldschool type browser.
The build-your-own-browser thing is perhaps a possibility for later, if experienced users want to change everything to their liking. But definitely not normal, what you're describing here sounds very strange. Where did you download this version, and which? Can you post a screenshot? What's your system? Do you see a gear-icon button? A home-icon button? Which browsers are you familiar with?

And as Hermes said, by all means use the current version by roytam1, KM77-Goanna. Don't mind if it's still called "unofficial" and "test" version, for today's web it's the best. And quite stable of course.

Thank you, Hermes and Siria
Well it's reassuring that there's so-active life watching and responding.
'My problem', as you put it, included the fact that I had absolutely nothing but a command line slot and a white screen. I had no means of checking the version (other than going back to the installation file. WhetherI had an ancient version or a less-than-imperfect installation I'm not sure. I'd have to go retrace my steps to try and find those answers, and it probably doesn't matter now.
I have taken your advice and downloaded that file, which Windows XP doesn't know what to make of. I'll try renaming it .zip and see what happens.
I have downloaded and installed version 75, and now have a 3-strip top bar, with what look like enough controls to make a full-function browser.
So, thanks.

I may have more qq later !

Quick update.
Basically one happy bunny.
I have been using Opera, which I like because of its capacious screen of quick-load icons, but it's very fussy about where it goes, so I sometimes have to fire up Firefox (go and have a coffee........) Reluctant to go to Chrome.
Still can't make anything of the compressed file I downloaded. Would it improve my 'experience' much/at all? - if so, thoughts on how I do it gratefully received.

It's weird. Basic browsing experience, and screen presentation, now I have the controls, way superior to any other browser I've tried. Why isn't K-Meleon recognised as the world leader here ?

Thanks, huys

You're on XP? SP2 or SP3? Because the newest KM-Goanna version needs at least SP3, although SP2 runs it too after exchanging one of its core dll files.

Yes "7z" is another zip-variant as you already assumed. It's widely popular for free software, and most modern zip-tools can handle it too, along with a bunch of other zipping formats. Your ZIP app is probably very old. Perhaps simply install the "7-zip" app too? It's tiny and fast.
https://www.7-zip.org/

Perhaps we should mention that the 7z installations are by default portable, that means they create the profile folders inside the program folder. And this means, depending on how restrictive your system is, that you must give yourself writing rights for that profile folder.
This portable setup is handy for running different KM-versions without conflicts between them. Especially handy for testing and comparing them.
But if you prefer to have the profiles in the systems user folders, simple delete this file: "profile.ini" (no "s", not "profiles.ini")

Hehe, yeah us KM users here surely agree grinning smiley Sadly most other people out there complain KM were so outdated and complicated, especially that it had "too many buttons"...and ugly... Pfff...
Can you explain a bit more what you mean with superior exactly? Just curious smiling smiley
If you happen to LIKE lots of buttons, you can tweak a lot by the way. Just example http://kmeleonbrowser.org/wiki/?binary=internal%3A%2F%2F36c578879f7c24344a02b72b9ea41eff.jpeg

Hallo, again, Siria

Amd thanks for your continuing interest.
'Superior' - it is way, way faster than anything else I've tried. And, on those of the sites which I visit regularly which I have been to in K-Meleon so far ( BBC News e.g.), the actual layout seems recognisable but somehow simpler and cleaner.

Yeah, XP. It's a issue I have been not quite getting round to for too long. The thing is, I like XP. I've used every Windows incarnation from 3>10, and I do think XP is the most balanced and efficent - but it is no longer supported, so bits are falling off in terms of using it to contact the world. The other thing is that I'm a musician, and it is beyond question that XP was the best Windows for using midi, and it has gone downhill rather sharply since then. I use a lot of Open Source software, and I will probably try some form of Linux. Windows 10 is a nightmare - seriously less functional in everyday-use aspects than long-gone predecessors.

So far I'm pretty happy in K-M 75.1. I'm not quite on top of how it tabs - I can open a new one, but can only ever see one window, and when I click the very top right X, I'm told I'm shutting all open tabs. But I'll get there. It's worth it.
Have a good day, wherever you are.

@Ian Graham

I strongly recommend to download 7z archiver for many reasons (it is free, stable, does everything that other archivers and most importantly you get full support for almost all archive formats including RAR5). That is, the problem of using archivers and the absolute majority of archive formats will not appear on the agenda for a long time.

I myself use old OS for similar reasons (I have not weak hardware, but I use old server OS because of stability and convenience, unfortunately which modern OS do not offer). Yes, this involves certain nuances and requires additional skills, but the result and the convenience are worth it. For other purposes there are virtual machines.

Another tip: the link I gave you is the latest version of the browser. This has significantly improved stability for the modern web and is better able to handle modern heavy sites. I do love the versions 75.x, but still they often begin to fail on fancy sites (which is becoming more and more unfortunately).
...
Especially since it is necessary to simply unpack the archive (no need to install anything).

Just in case, the link to 7-zip (~1 Mcool smiley https://www.7-zip.org/a/7z1805.exe (v.18.05)

The theme which explains how to run if not SP3 and how to solve possible problems ( hand-advanced or usual method through the installation of small MB add-on):
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,145119

As a result, you get an engine almost similar to the 52-th gecko (with reservations, of course). If you have questions or something is unclear please ask. I can record a video to illustrate what to do.

From Linux distributions I can advise Lubuntu LTS (as compatible with most packages from Ubuntu, but much more economical and miniature). On Linux, you can install Wine and use many Windows programs. It is also a good option (with enough hardware power) to use virtual machines. Here, too, there are nuances and tricks that deal with a separate conversation. But it is quite possible to run even Windows 10 in a virtual machine on the average dual core CPU under XP. Of course, the availability of hardware virtualization option is welcome.

Sounds like tabs are enabled, but you don't see the tab bar? Perhaps it's there and you just overlook it, because out-of-box it's far too narrow and mostly covered by the neighbor toolbar? This happened to myself a couple times lately when creating a new KM7X profile, but as usual lately can suddenly not reproduce it anymore. Oh well. If that's the case, look closely at the left side, some 5cm are visible only, and pull the neighbor bar more to the right side.
In case Tabs are completely off yet, the settings are found here:
F2 > GUI > Toolbars > (right side tabsmiling smiley Tab Bar

Oh forgot, and right-click on everything to discover more menus and options! Especially on the toolbar buttons. Not all have a right-click menu, but many. Unlike in other programs, those buttons are not marked with additional arrows to save space.

And the FAQ has also some important tips, although partly outdated:

@Hermes: Thanks for always good tips. Incidentally, just yesterday I dared a teeny tiny first step and bought a Linux magazine with beginner tutorials in it - knowing full well that I'm not going to tackle that giant amount of learning time anytime soon and it will probably stay unread for long. But some day will be forced to switch, sigh. Now will keep an eye on this LTS version too.

Hallo again, both

and massive thanks for your generous patience with tips and info.

I have now downloaded and installed 7 Zip, and with it unpacked the 77 Goanna zip. I can't apply it immediately. Last week, for associated reasons but before I knew of K-Meleon I downloaded the SP3 installation file, and am bracing myself to go through that.

" it is necessary to simply unpack the archive (no need to install anything). "
Presumably its location is critical - all that stuff needs to go in my K-Meleon installed location ?

And I'm bookmarking the Linux tips. I'm on a big old Sony Vaio, which aside from a slightly too-small C: partition, still seems to me an adequate machine for what I ask of it, and my medium term plan is to make sure I get everything off it I want to retain from n years of daily use (and for the past 18 months or so, I saved all current sutff to removable drives, and moved some older stuff), and then wipe it (or more likely, have it wiped) and start again as a Linux installation.

On final tangential question for now: is there an email client from the same team or stable ? And if not, what do you use ? Again, I've always used OE6, but that recently has creaked very badly, and I'm now in eM Client, which is OK, but I'd still be open to something else with that intangible comfort factor.

Many thanks again

Ian G

You need to take into account that installation of SP3 can bring down activation of system.
In any case, be sure to always create an image of system partition (to avoid headaches in future). It doesn't take much time but can save a lot.

In your case, version of kernel32.dll is critical. You can always install the official patch from M$ WindowsXP-KB944340 (EN):

I was forced to make my mirror because M$ diligently removes useful files for old OS : (
(I have a significant database of updates and drivers for almost all classic OS).

This official patch only changes the kernel. Often after that, installing SP3 becomes impractical. But this will not interfere with its installation, and most importantly the installation of the official patch does not harm the activation of the system (unlike SP). But the choice is always Yours.

With updated OS kernel version, K-MELEON (which you unpacked) can be started simply by running its executable. By default, profile is created in its own folder, so there will be no garbage in system.

I think it is reasonable to keep the basic familiar system and learn a new one in parallel. Many things may not work out at once and it is not reasonable to stay with a non-functional PC.

Almost all Linux distributions support so-called "live startup". That is, you can try system without installing it on your PC. Just booting up with liveCD or liveUSB. Unlike Windows PE, it is a full-featured OS loaded into RAM. Some even work (like this) without any installing to hard drive. For home theater and web surfing, as well as basic tasks of office is more than enough (out of box).

Previously used the old Opera (presto). It was a great browser and email client. You can also use Seamonkey. Still there is the Bat (but it trialware / shareware). Recently switched to web version of mail (pretending to be her, through useragent as PDA, on part of postal operators there is a super light version for PDA devices).

I had absolutely nothing but a command line slot and a white screen. I had no means of checking the version (other than going back to the installation file
