How to save a pdf instead of having it open inline or in standalone reader?

Sorry, if this question has been asked earlier.

I do not want to have the PDF files displayed in the browser window or opened in standalone Acrobat Reader. Is there any plugin/setting available which would allow me to save the pdf?

What I notice currently with my K-Meleon install is that with some sites it would open the pdf inline, and with others it wouldn't open the pdf at all (for example, if I try to check my e-bill from my telephone provider, K-Meleon is not able to open the pdf -- just shows me a blank window when I click on the link. With Firefox, or even IE, I am prompted to open or save the pdf). Any help would be appreciated. Let me know pls if you need any additional details from me (reg my KMeleon settings/plugins). thanks, Jas

F2 > File Types > change the action to save it

If the extension isn't in the list, Edit > Edit Mimetypes > add

application/pdf
pdf
Open
Save, and if needed retrun in File Types

One of the "what-I-learned-today"-things smiling smiley

And a link if the exact mimetype for something is unknown:

Thanks, JujuLand. I edited the Mimetypes to add the settings as you advised, and then I was able to see the extension in the list (F2 | Browsing | File Handling | By Type). Shows as:

Extension -- File Type -- Action
PDF -- pdf -- Save to Disk

=> However, it did not help. Tried these two activities.

a) did a google search for a pdf file, and clicked on one of the results -- browser crashed (twice). On the third attempt, the browser became non-responsive (the browser did not crash, but no link would work now). Either way, the pdf did not get saved.

b) logged into my account on my telephone provider website:
clicked on the link for e-bill [ javascript:showBill(); ], which opened up a new window with this address (https://service.xxxxxxxx.xxx/PS/14/english/postForEBPPViewBill.jsp?bd=20091001&WT.svl=MAViewBill) in the url bar, however nothing happened. The browser became unresponsive after this. Tried this multiple times with the same result.

=> Then went back into my "Preferences" and changed the Action for pdfs:

Extension -- File Type -- Action
PDF -- pdf -- Open with Adobe Reader 7.0

Tried again both the activities mentioned above, and this time saw the pdf files download to a C:\...\Temp folder and then open in standalone acrobat reader -- which is good, but I am still not able to do what I wanted to i.e. save the pdf file to a specified location, instead of having it open up automatically.

Am I doing anything wrong?

Resolved.

Edited the MIME Types again.
----------------------------------
MIME type: application/pdf
Description: pdf
Extension(s): pdf
+
Open it with C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe
+
Always ask me before handling files of this type
----------------------------------
(The extension though does not now show up in the "By Type" list in Preferences)

Now it prompts me to open or save the pdf file. Thanks again, JujuLand, for putting me in the right direction.

I used Nir Sofer's Mime Types View to make a list of everything I can possibly have for faster reference smiling smiley
