K-Meleon 74: bugs and deficiencies list
Posted by: rodocop
Date: November 04, 2013 12:00PM

Well, let's try to create full list of what to be done or fixed in new K-Meleon in one thread. Not a bad idea?

1) No Preferences and dependent functions (an architecture of browser is significantly changed for newer Geckos, so all the chrome structure must be rebuilded, I suppose)

2) No 'Clear data' in Privacy

3) 'Insert URL' js-button not working here on forum. Inserting image, mail address or quote isn't working too.
Other formatting works.

Please, place here all info about bugs found and features missed.

4) no search from context menu

5) some accelerators, set for macros, do not work. For example, accels for macro functions Go_Up and Go_Top

6) no password manager

7) for some reason new KM uses non-default PDF reader of my system (Foxit) but Adobe Reader (being more precise - Acrobat) which is also installed here but isn't default.

8) some js on pages do not work or work veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slooooooooooooooow!

9) bookmark manager 'nullifies' names of bookmark folders - they all get the name (null) on every relaunch even if being manually edited

Moreover - at every KM relaunch BM manager assigns 'Personal Toolbar Folder' status to the top folder in the BM-list.

10) no history

11) no FindAsYouType

12) no context menu (and no way at all) to manage settings in about:config

It looks like this version is made on base of KM 1.7 inheriting all deficiencies from that build.

13) Right click on "Home" button does not bring up the menu expected. It does nothing.

13a) most of right-click menus do not work properly or at all.
Home, Reload, GoToURL etc. ...

14) no Keyword Autosearch

You're very right there, kingsparrow - the chromes did a lot of essential work to make it again a fully functional browser. Thx

Still missing though : the keyword search in urlbar and some plugins : for example not possible to hear music in myspace or deezer and there is lacking a wmv plugin for some sites. I am sure that will be solved in the near future seen the progress today.

K-Meleon - the browser that arises again like a phenix : yeah !!

Still absent:
1) native history
2) FindAsYouType (FAYT)
3) password manager
4) some plugins integration
5) keyword autosearch in URLbar
6) Privacy kplugin (need to be recompiled for this version)
7) Flashblock (needs readaptation to new KM)
8) AdBlock (needs readaptation to new KM)
... to be continued...

Bugs
1) Bookmarks manager 'nullifies' names of BM folders on every KM launch excepr the first one. (Bookmarks kplugin needs bugfixing)
2) MIME types actions crashes K-Meleon
3) Cancelling Print function crashes K-Meleon
4) Buttons on the forum still do not work (insert URL, mail, image, quote)
5) Not working fast scroll by mouse-dragging scrollbar handle.
6) K-Meleon don't understand 'resource:///'-addresses
... to be continued...

Can be corrected:
1) Empty search engines list - simply add search engines in Preferences->Web Search. Then close KM and delete Profiles->StartupCache folder.
Restart KM.

2) Some items in preferences are inactive - just copy all from kmprefs.jar from KM Twin (open it like archive) into omni.ja\chrome\toolkit\content\kmprefs folder of new KM. Also replace kmeleon.js and kmprefs.js in defaults\pref with ones from KM Twin.

more details on the history issue. the dll is seen : the pref page show the line enable disable for it
what is strange is : no icon or menu for the history appears

(my history dll worked with Places module ,aka sql, and the same gui code than kmeleon 1.6 1.7 with gecko 3.6 and 5.0)

@ jo23

I have noticed that the date changes on places.sqlite but the number of bytes always stays at 10,240 KB. I wonder if anything is written there.
I tried to look at the file with a sqlite browser program, but that failed to show me anything.

I know very little about sqlite files.

James,
the size of places.sqlite is preconfigured. This is made to avoid fragmentation of database file which slows down the browser.
So all the 10Mb are just empty at start. But when at work this file not grows but is populated with history info.

Developers hope that such a size would be enough for most users. But I've seen some builds, where places-file is presized at 20Mb.

Bug Find&Fix Timeline:

1) Fixed New Bookmark manager doesn't 'nullify' folder names
2) Found New Bookmark Manager doesn't allow 'Add Bookmark here' from menu
3) Found Closing tab by double-click sometimes starts to crash KM

You (seotaewong40) are banned from Mozilla Bugzilla because you're repeatedly making incorrect statements in bug #594788. How to enable your Mozilla Bugzilla account?

Since you don't have K-Meleon installed on your computer and you're not a spammer.

There's HyperSonic, a browser based on the Firefox development release (Aurora). The browser is free for download (see internetwebbrowser.net for download links).

I have some issues with it. They are:

1. Saving any changes to the bookmarks causes all of the folders in them to have their name changed to (null).

2. Typing in a nickname given to a folder containing bookmarks and pressing Enter results in it crashing.

Hi, i find that "flash block" is not working
There is no provision to delete history, catche, temp files and others on exit.
Some how web sites icons are not stored in bookmarks column.
Finally compared to other versions of KM ,it is consuming more amount of memory.

Try update from naruman containing alternative flashblocker

Something is provided by naruman also, something is subject to recreate for new version

Favicon handling was buggy in earlier versions too.

It's not a bug, it's feature! This is a payment for ability to load modern sites due to new engine.

try new bookmarks.dll from Dorian's update
Just unpack it overwriting old file.

Also you can try to install all the update - simply unpack it in KM folder and let overwrite old files.

You need to activate Privacy Toolbar (View->Toolbars->Privacy Bar) - the Flash may be controlled only from the buttons there.

It appears to me that the flash objects can be told 'never to appear' from the privacy bar. This is a little different from the old flashblock where the object would appear, but just not play unless the user clicked on the object's icon. There is no icon now.

There are two items on the privacy bar about flash. The first is 'kill flash objects'. That is not the one you need for this. The second flash is one item to the right of user agent. It is an 'on/off' toggle. Set that one to 'off' and give it a try.

I use this page for testing: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

If flash is on, I can see my version. If flash is off, there is no version info or placeholder.

There could be another way to block flash without flashblocker.

fireFox has as extension that blocks flash by blocking the flash plugin.

The the ability to block pluginds could fix the flash Blocking problem.

Correct for the default skins.

But it depends on how You (any user) edit it.
Example code from the toolbars.cfg of my used/favorite skin.

The "#" comments out the line of code that begins with it.
I used the default code but commented out items I do not like or use.

But note that there are skins around where people made big code changes.

Kandra,

I don't usually use the privacy bar, but the instruction, from rodocop, said I should. My privacy bar looks like this:

I don't really know how it get there. I don't see code for it in my toolbars.cfg file.

Kandra,

I think I have figured it out. My KM 74 is a mix of code from Dorian and from naruman. I think the functions that are new in privacy bar come from a macro named flash.kmm that was in a group of macro for one of his updates.

I think you only need the flash.kmm file because Dorian's is the last chrome on my system.
