updated unofficial variation: K-Meleon-1.5.3-Gecko1.9.1.zip
Posted by: Fred
Date: December 22, 2009 01:52PM

I have uploaded a new updated unofficial variation
K-Meleon-1.5.3-Gecko-1.9.1 based on Seamonkey 2.0.1 .
to offer a temporary updateable alternative for people that
are concerned about security.
Gecko 1.9.1.7pre/20091216 from Seamonkey 2.0.2pre (Tinderbox nightly).
This is an experimental version.
The main purpose of this variation is the possibility of further security updates, using
Gecko 1.9.1 instead of 1.8 , which is no longer supported by Mozilla .
This version works only, if you have the files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll and mfc71u.dll
in your system or in your K-Meleon main folder. If you need these dll's, look for them
in the Internet.
It should work in Windows XP , Windows Vista and in Linux with Wine.
Windows 98 is probably not supported anymore by Gecko 1.9.1 .
The profile will be created inside the K-Meleon folder by default.
Don't overwrite your existing profile.
If in Linux you want the profile inside the configuration folder ".wine",
rename the file profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed before the first start.
Firefox can be set as user agent in the menu Tools/User Agent,
to avoid errors in complex webpages with insufficient
browser recognition.
An additional Phoenity skin with a Javascript button has been added. Reload the page
after enabling or disabling javascript.
A general startpage is already in the bookmarks.
Some functions may not work in this variation, consider that it is only experimental.
Extensions may work or won't work. I have not tested them.

the constant disk churn has completely gone with this trunk..the hds finally go to standby just like 1.8, this has never happened with the ff trunks.. the seamonkey guys must have fixed it

Well, I just got curious when reading it wouldn't work probably on win98 - and pity, must confirm it tongue sticking out smiley For my updated win98se. Just like the current official release (153), no chance to start the kmeleon.exe, not with, and neither without kernelex, or with any of the various compatibility settings, grmpf.

looks like this unofficial version is going to help me a lot until the official version with the latest Gecko Engines is released.
Gecko 1.9.x manages memory much better and on top of that, it's faster than 1.8.1, which is used in the official version.

@ siria

If nothing would help, and if you have an ADSL (DSL) net connection,
you could try to install the free VMware player from here :

https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=player&lp=1

and use a very small Linux distro in VMware player,
where you could install K-Meleon and Wine as the
emulator for Windows apps, where it should work then.

You could try for example DSL Linux, which has a
zipped vmx-version for VMware, from here (49 Mb) :

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.4.10-vmx.zip

or adapt the included .vmx file inside the zip,
where you only have to replace the name of the included
.iso file to another small .iso, which you would put
then into the same folder as the .vmx file, for
example a Standard .iso version of CDlinux, which has
a more modern 2.6 kernel (62 Mb), from here :

ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/cdlinux/releases/0.9.5/CDlinux-0.9.5.iso

If you only should have a dial-up Internet connection,
it is possible too, but connecting would be more difficult
and not working in any case, while ADSL (DSL) would
connect automatically without interaction.

Unfortunately, Gecko 1.9.x does not work anymore in Windows 98,
in all Gecko browsers, including K-Meleon, Seamonkey and Firefox.
So, a small Linux as a virtual System could be a solution.

Whoah....
Okay, thanks. I may be forced to try that if the official KM1.6 still has that problem, and my old notebook is still alive then ;-)
But its not true that ALL gecko19-browsers wouldnt run: Firefox runs great (with kernelex)! As does the current gecko1.8-KM with kmeleon9x.exe- bot NOT with kmeleon.exe for NT, even today. So I think it's not the geckos fault, and theres a bit hope yet smiling smiley
But am scared enough now to go and soon try out compatibility with the new official seamonkey!

EDIT:
Sigh. Seamonkey 201 doesn't run, but the errors look much more harmless than this kernel-error that produces the KM exe. Perhaps because of the way of 'installation' only, but don't hold any real hope. After just unzipping the install-exe (for lack of a zip to download) and finding the program in a folder "nonlocalized", a click on seamonkey.exe open's only a little empty window that says only:
"<window id="main-window"

Have searched around for quite awhile, but no solution, only that such errors are very frequent, many years old already, and seem to have something to do with XUL and skins and extensions... But the only two included extensions are the default skins, so removing doesn't help tongue sticking out smiley
Oh well, it's just a really, really, REALLY old system!
But if all else fails, I'll probably nicely survive with KM154 for quite some more time - if the compi lives yet grinning smiley

There's actually some hope left, someone at the kernelex forum had posted:

Quote

Seamonkey 2.0a3 works!

Installed KernelEx 4.0 RC2 in 98SE with 98Lite (removes IE and all its components).
The Seamonkey install requires Compatibility set to Win2000SP4, as does Seamonkey.exe.

The install failed to finish, but all files were installed.
It did NOT pick up old settings, and did NOT respond to being run with -GRElocal; the profile was installed in the default \Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\etc.
I will have to do the fixups manually. This could be a bug in the Seamonkey alpha.

But it works fine, if a bit slower than Seamonkey 1.1.14. Could be it's just slower.
So I tried again with fully "installing" SM201, and actually it opens and shows the extension, but then appears a little popup to aks for the default-setting as browser and email. Whatever I do then, it crashes. Restarted windows, still the same. Suspect perhaps some prob with profile location since it keeps writing "is relative=1" but reads and writes from appdata only. Anyway, it seems the GECKO in it works for someone at least ;-)

The file profile.ini is at present empty, which
should be sufficient to start creating the profile
inside the K-Meleon main folder.
Before it always included the text :

[profile]
path=profiles
IsRelative=1

You can try to change the profile.ini in this way,
after deleting a possibly existing profile
in the K-Meleon main folder.

Or, else, you can rename profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed,
delete a possibly existing profile in the K-Meleon
main folder, and rename the existing K-Meleon profile
folder in appdata in C: which belongs to your
actual official K-Meleon to something else, and try
to create the profile for the variation in appdata.
If it should fail, you can still rename the official profile
back to what it was before.
I hope that you succeed.

Uhm, certainly not with the KM exe, because it has that kernel error that can't be worked around, even in todays official version with Gecko-18x. But just for curiosity if just the GECKO-1.9 from seamonkey would possibly work, as does the gecko from firefox 3.5, I installed the official Seamonkey201, the whole browser without any kmeleon wrapper around it. And that's the one with the profiles problem (if it's really that). Yes I've tried copying and modifying the ini as well as the complete profile folder, but it all gets instantly overwritten again when SM is opened and crashes with that "default" asking popup.
But I leave it at that now smiling smiley It's getting a bit too offtopic in this thread, and was merely meant for a little "would-the-gecko-possibly-work" test. And the other guy wrote that he had an alpha version that worked for him, so whatever it is, it can probably be worked out ;-)

Dear Fred

Sorry I face some conflict having both KM_S201 (installed first) and KM-153_Gecko191 (installed later) under Program Files on XP-SP3.
(installed = just extract both browsers to their own default folders and make shortcuts to k-meleon.exe on desktop) .

If KM-153 is open, and I wish to open a link in KM-S201, only another KM-153 window opens. To use KM-S201 I must close down KM-153 first.

Anyway to have both browsers functional, without closing down one or the other ?
Is there any path I must specify in their shortcut on desktop ?
Appreciate your tips - thanks !

Thanks
Robin

Look here :

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/CommandLineOptions

pathtokmeleon -new

should open a new brrowser instance.
It can be that the browser complains :
URL -new not found
or similar, but clicking on the homepage button
will go to your homepage, and the browser should
act as a second instance beside the earlier
opened one.
Simply edit the properties of the icon, right clicking
on it and adding -new at the end of the path.

You've got yourself a winner. I works without a hitch. I only miss session saving and the polished search engine config. It's almost ready for prime-time! I will be using it as my main browser until it breaks (if it ever breaks). :-)

Thanks for a great Christmas present!

good job Fred. did you remember to implement the New Tab menu command and hotkey combo [Ctrl+T] in this updated unofficial KM1.53-gecko1.9.1 release? otherwise I will have to add them manually after trying out this new one.

Yes, you're right, it's included in this variation,
whose layout is a mirror of the official version,
as far as it was possible.

Any chance you're going to do a firefox update version based on Gecko 1.9.2?

Tks.

The Firefox version with 1.9.2 is the Release
Candidate 3.6 of the next Firefox generation.
I do not think that we should use this too
early, it would confuse people.
We are waiting for an official update, and
until then, my experimental versions can serve
as temporary possibilities for users, who are
concerned about security, because they are
based on the official versions Seamonkey 2.0.1
and Firefox 3.5.6 which are still safe, because
the recent versions of the two browsers did not
fix critical vulnerabilities, as far as I can see.

aww. I'll add it manually in the current release but I will keep reminding you to add the Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut into the next release of KM-Gecko1.9.1.x (until the new release has it).
