Ctrl+F to close the search bar

Is there any way to make ctrl+F hide the search bar if it is currently shown?
(ie, make ctrl+F into a toggle)

I don't think so. Control + F calls 'ID_EDIT_FIND' to open the search dialog. I don't find a command ID for closing the search dialog.

Hi,

unlike many other threads opened in "Improvement Requests" by newbies who were not able to find their howTos (- or did not care to search), this seems to me to be a thread that belongs into

"Improvement Requests".
( May an Admin be so kind, and move it...?)

And gets one vote from me, too.

Cheers

What do you mean by "search bar"? The extension? The search prompt? Or the the Find In Page bar at the bottom of the window? If it's the Find In Page bar, just use the ESC key.

Hi, jsnj,

thanks. Must admit I hadn't realized that. :O
A command ID for it would be a nice thing, notwithstanding...
Or is there another way to send the Esc key, from a Button or from a menu item?
Else I'll have to make another autohotkey thing for that...

Uh, that little cross left of the search field...? ;-)

Thanx jsnj, as so often , the solution is right there and easy, one only needs to know it!

Well, that is about my 4th choice where to have that button ...
And: I open that bar by a gesture, would like to close it that way, too.

would be perfect for me!

Hi jsnj

I did not know about the esc key. Is is documented somewhere?

The 'esc' key only closes it if you are typing in the search box.
If you say, want to scroll up and down the page to find the highlighted terms, pressing esc doesn't close the box (since it's bound to 'Stop')

Well, I was going to find out whether or not the option exists first. If it does exist, it would be silly to make a thread to request it.

Don't know if it's documented anywhere, but it's pretty much universal browser behavior. IE, Firefox, Seamonkey, Avant, Opera & Chrome all use CTRL+F for Find In Page and then ESC to close. The only browser I know of that behaves as Bear's request is Maxthon. Can't think of a way to implement it through macros because I don't know how to detect codewise if the bar is open or not. Perhaps combining ID_EDIT_FIND in a macro with a toggling a pref might work with CTRL F only. Using the X to close it or ESC would mess things up.

If you're scrolling a page, isn't your hand already on the mouse? In that case, use the X to close it. But if you're using the keyboard to scroll then I guess it could be handy.

I can't quite figure out what to do to have ESC *not* close the find bar *confused*
Could anyone describe it in tiny little steps?

Open Find In Page bar, Use the mouse to focus anywhere on the page or anywhere other than the Find Bar. Esc won't close it.

If you are on the keyboard, you can press ctrl+F to focus the find bar, then press Esc to close it - but that is a lot of keys to press D:
well...okay, two and a half keys. But still.
There was a firefox plugin to close the find bar with ctrl+F, but it's not compatible with the newest release. Dx

Another possibility is press Ctrl+F again to send the focus to Find bar and then press ESC key to close it.
