I won't be back? Scroogle?

It seems that Scroogle has gotten under the skin of Google, which means no more Scroogle it seems...

Any good alternatives to Scroogle?
Fact is that Google has always been a bunch of jerks. :mad:
Only decent thing they have ever done was to support Ron Paul.
But the reason they did that was thinking that less internet regulation will help
their profits even more.

Some alternatives :

ixquick
clusty
yauba
ecosia (not privacy-oriented but a nice search engine anyway)

mhf,

I got you on ixquick, it does seem to be private. Not sure what engines it uses, but seems to be a multi-search engine like Clusty, using Yahoo, Bing, Google, among others.

Ecosia not being privacy-oriented gets left off my list of possible replacements.

Yauba??? How would you load that one up in KM?

I believe there is a need for a privacy-aware search engine in KM to replace Scroogle which (at least for now) has gone bye bye.

The search string is visible in the URL bar after performing a search. Just copy and paste(minus the search term) to search engines in preferences. Then add it under the Web Search tab as usual.

jsnj,

Much thanks for the help. I was looking in the wrong place. This one seems like a good keeper. I think I'll put it in that multi-search macro.

P.S.

Saving the link as a bookmark, and clicking on the
new bookmark will open a search prompt for sslscroogle.

Fred, Panzer or anyone. Do you know if that can be added to this K-Meleon 1.6.0a?
I do not see how to do that. I cannot get those functions to work in it. sad smiley
Assumed they were disabled in the alpha builds.

Yes, adding search engines seems not to be
implemented yet in the 1.6 alphas.
But you can add SSLscroogle manually.
Close the browser and open inside the K-Meleon root folder
the file /defaults/pref/I10n.js with Notepad.
Search for the part //WebSearch .
There are two engine2, so Yahoo is not shown
at the Search button.
Give first Wikipedia engine3 in the two
concerned lines, and add SSLscroogle as engine4, as follows :

pref("kmeleon.plugins.macros.search.engine3.name", "Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia");
pref("kmeleon.plugins.macros.search.engine3.url", "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&fulltext=Search&search="winking smiley;
pref("kmeleon.plugins.macros.search.engine4.name", "SSLscroogle");
pref("kmeleon.plugins.macros.search.engine4.url", "https://ssl.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbwssl.cgi?Gw="winking smiley;

and save the changed file using "Save", not "Save as"
in the menu of Notepad.
This would save the changed file correctly with the ending .js
to its origin.
After restarting the browser, Yahoo and SSLscroogle should
appear on right-clicking the search button.

P.S.

The parts forming an URL have again been
shown as links in the forum.
Put in the correct URL of the link
at the places, where they should be.
It's a nuisance that code can not be
correctly shown anymore, as the
code tags don't work anymore.
I hope you understand how to do it
nevertheless.

Alternatively this and other prefs can be changed in about:config.
Almost all new or changed settings work without a restart there, not sure if search engines too... Important to know in general is that the "default" settings in "defaults/pref"-folder are only active as long as they are not overwritten by "user-set" profile settings, which are in prefs.js or about:config (which is basically the same). If e.g. there exists already a number 3+4, copied over from another profile, then only the profile settings would be showing.

I only get this:

Sorry, but we are unable to provide results from Google.

Most errors are because three or more valid characters must be in the
search box before we pass them along. Languages other than English
require that your browser support the UTF-8 character set. Sometimes
our request to Google does not get through, and you should try again.

Using bookmark works fine.

Note that %s for the keyword is only necessary for a bookmark,
and must be left out for the search button,

The strings in sirias post above are correct.

English coverage. They will have to destroy the data.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100515/ap_on_hi_te/eu_tec_germany_google_privacy

Google sounds like it was an accidental, unintended incident/breach.
The much better if a mere accident makes Google change policies. smiling smiley

Google simply forgets that once data are collected they can be used in a way not originally intended - e.g. fall into falls hands.
