k-meleon from CD

Hi,

I need to run K-meleon from a CD but I'm out of luck so far:

1 - Tried the alternative distributions, but they use older versions (I need it to work in w7 and vista) and I can't personalize the appearance because I dont understand the tweaks made.

2 - Running with the profile stored in the K-meleon folder (opposed to running it with the multi-user mode) works locally but not on the CD, I'm assuming that happens due to the read-only environment.

3 - I tweaked the default profile so that, running from the CD, the browser creates my customized version in each computer, but it still have to write that in the user´s machine.

Any ideas on how I can keep my customized version of the profile without writing anything on the HD, running read-only from the CD?

thanks a lot!

Hi, americocs,

generally, this should work, with KM 1.54.
............Well, IT DOESN'T, I'm sorry for that ...........
Hopefully noone spent too much time trying ....

The steps to take, outlined roughly:

  • make a separate installation, profile in the KM-folder.
  • don't add any extensions yet.
  • go through all the F2 settings, disabling anything that might cause KM to try writing to the profile during runtime. More below.
For the first test, disable liberally to get a running CD version.
  • burn & test. If you miss some features, try re-adding them one-by-one for new test-CDs.
  • you may try adding extensions now, keeping in mind your goal. When satisfied:
  • make all customizations to the UI. When satisfied:
  • burn & verify.

Things to disable that come to my mind just now - list NOT comprehensive, and not all may really HAVE to be disabled!
  • cookies: accept for session only
  • history plugin
  • favicons
  • cache on disk (?)
  • sessions plugin

If this is for promoting K-Meleon among friends who use IE now, consider disabling bookmarks, enabling IE favorites (without setting any paths) - but make sure each one of your friends backs up his favs before starting KM.

Cheers
SoerenB

Hi Desga2 and SoerenB,

Hi read those threads and many other kiosk related, and I also disabled everything related to writing on disk.

In fact, the kiosk appearance is not the problem, I'm happy with what I accomplished using f2: I made a menuless, accelless version of K-meleon and its perfect in every way when running from my HD, and it doesnt create anything in the appdata folder.

The problem is when I burn it and run it from the CD: no matter how I try to tweak, I always receive this message: "the selected profile cannot be loaded, its already in use or the profile folder is not accessible" (my translation). then it opens the profile manager and get stuck there.

If I burn a CD with Fred's kiosk solution, on the other hand, everything works fine without writing anything on the HD, but I cannot identify what he has done to accomplish it (I've been trying). I'm not considering using Fred's solution directly because I want to use the latest K-meleon version and keep my own prefs.

In other words: customization is not the problem, the problem (I guess) is K-meleon accessing and using a profile that is stored in the read-only environment of the CD (either from the km/profiles or km/defaults).

I also followed the "How to make K-Meleon Portable" from Desga2, to no avail. I also tried the Portable APP version and I always end up stuck with the profile manager.

thanks for your help!

The architecture of my variation K-Meleon-forCD
does not work with K-Meleon-1.5.4 .
For that you would have to use one of the other
methods that have been mentioned.
Nevertheless I could update K-Meleon-forCD to
Gecko 1.8.1.24, which would bring the safety level
to the same as of KM-1.5.4, which uses Gecko 1.8.1.24.
I planned to do that anyhow, and I will upload a
variation KM-forCD-18124 as soon as I have made it.
As xthost.info seems not to work correctly for downloads
at the moment, I'll probably upload it somewhere else
temporarily.

I have uploaded KM18124forCD-Kiosk.zip temporarily to
Rapidshare.com. When Xthost.info will work again, I will
upload it there too.
This is a modified 1.x version, based on Mozilla 1.8.1.24,
Gecko date 20100210, as in KM-1.5.4, that can be burned to CD,
to be used from a CD drive, or from an USBstick or any other drive.
Nothing should be written onto a harddisk, and the
profile on CD unchanged.
Download from here :

http://rapidshare.com/files/392224895/KM18124forCD-Kiosk.zip.html

For information about burning it to CD read the
readme.html file and the notes for the earlier version, here :
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/UKmeleon#km18121cd
When used from a USB stick or other writable media,
make the K-Meleon folder readable only, not writable,
to avoid changes from cache or history.
From a CD this is not necessary, is is read only anyhow.
Note that the menu and all commands are in the right-click menu,
where also the shortcuts are given.

Regards

Fred
