K-meleon will not open from external programs
Posted by: Imortis

I am using the latest beta version of K-Meleon on Win2000. I have set K-Meleon as the default browser and installed the DefaulterII plugin. But any external program that has a way of launching a website will not launch K-Meleon. I used to have Opera on here and it would launch just fine.

Any Suggestions? Do you need more information?

It is a registry corruption/error on Your system.

Try set default again. Edit or F2 -> Browsing options Set as Default Browser.
That should normally do it. Make sure that You are Administrator while You do it.

In some rare cases "Set Default..." waun't work & it helps registry to recover when You set IE as default and then do "Set Default..." again.

I am no specialist for Win2000. I know WinME and XP and what I have read about Win2000. I only read Your question while checking for spam in this forum part.

p.s. AFAIK not a K-Meleon bug. I will move Your thread to General where You can get support answers more easily.

Bugs and development are less often visited by users. & the devs normally answer/react only to verified K-Meleon bugs that have been posted to the bug tracker.

There are default-probs with newer systems, but on win2000 it's strange... Perhaps some other browser is 'hijacking' the default setting to itself?? Most have some setting of the sort "Check each time if I am the default browser", and if that was/is checked, that could be one possible reason. Otherwise - no idea, am no expert either ;-)

Thanks to you both. I will try resetting IE to the default them Setting K-Meleon again as this is something I have not tried. I have tried to set K-Meleon two and three times in a row to see if it would make a difference. It did not. I will let you know what I find.

Edit:
Nope. Didn't work. I will try to find out if I have a registry corruption problem.

I use Windows 2000 (nice to see another win2k die hard user winking smiley) and K-meleon with several versions (well, only 3) and no one gave me a problem.

But..., yes, there is a but, what I use to register K-meleon is not the setDefault given on each version, but the one provided by... JuJuland for the 0.9 version that is still functional for its purpose, this is, register K-meleon as the default browser, and this version never failed to me.

It works as an installer (even it doesn't touch anything but the registry), you need to provide the home path for K-meleon (where k-meleon.exe it is) and set how do you want to register (protocols and files) and done.

But think on one thing: some applications launch by default IE, despite the system config is telling. I hope your problem is not this one because you can't do anything.

A tiny bit way off topicgrinning smiley. Could it be that in spite of the many tech advances that W2K is perhaps still the most stable Windows Desktop OS?

Hate to burst bubbles here, but...

I was given a 500MHz laptop. I am trying to make it usable with lightweight software. I TRIED to put WinXP on it, but had to take it off because there are no drivers for video and sound past Win2000...

Good news is K-meleon is the fastest browser I have used on it. Works so well I came very close to setting it up on my Desktop (2.8ghz triple core AMD). And I may still.

What external programs are using to open K-Meleon?
This is very strange because the new installer and setdefault work to Win7, this must work for win2K as the 1.5.4 installer and setdefault.

Are you sure your user have permissions to modify the registry?

Imortis,

It sounds like a registry issue. Perhaps a different utility to try and change your settings like setbrowser.

@desga2:
What I mean is this: Some programs have a link in their help menu that is supposed to open the default browser and take you to their homepage. Those do not work on my system. They don't do ANYTHING. The only time anything opened a browser window was when I clicked a link in a CHM file, and that opened IE, but I think that is not changeable.

@ndebord:
I will try the tool you linked too and see if it works. Thank you.

Imortis,

I understand what you're saying, for example, on my XP PRO SP3 system, my email program (Foxmail 5) allows me to click on a link and open up with the system's default browser. Using SetBrowser I set up KM 1.6 as my default browser and it all works (here).

Ah ha! SetBrowser did in fact work! It also said that K-Meleon.exe was already the default browser. When I clicked on the test button it does open the webpage, but it also gives an error message. Nothing else give an error and all seems to work as it should. Thank you all for your help.

Imortis,

Yes, it does give you that error message, then it goes ahead and loads the test website anyway!

I think that Setbrowser wants to only find either IE or Netscape, and so complains when you insist upon using something else. I've never tried to use it with other programs like Opera, Chrome or Safari, but then I don't much use any of those.
