Dithering algorithm for 4bit display

In playing with an old system with an ATI Basic-16 video card, I have found that K-Meleon falls behind whatever algorithm is used by IE6 to display images at low colour depths (16 colours, in my case). Is this a limitation of the Gecko engine? I have turned images.dither to 'true' yet IE6 is able to display most photos realistically while K-Meleon displays them in almost a two-tone image. Is there a setting that I am missing?

I'm running the stable release (1.5.4) on Windows 98SE.

This is an old bug in Mozilla Gecko code. Mozilla Gecko browser not rendering fine images with less than 256 colors (8 bits). I think this is fixed in Gecko 1.9.x.
You can try with KM 1.6Beta2 if you use KernelEx for Win9x because browsers with Gecko 1.9.x like KM 1.6Beta2 need Win2K or later, win9x is not supported anymore since Gecko 1.9.x.
