Browsing local folders

This applies not only to K-Meleon, but also to Firefox, so it's apparently Gecko-related behavior, but I wonder if anyone knows how to force the display of local folders to always use the same sort order.

When browsing the local folders on my hard drive, everything comes up in alphabetical order, and the folders are mixed in with the files. I prefer to see them like they usually are in Windows when alphabetically sorted, i.e. folders always on top. In the browser it can be done manually by clicking the left-most column header, but I have to do that for each subfolder, and of course the setting is lost once I navigate away from it. Could this be fixed with one of the many undocumented about:config settings? My Google searches have turned up nothing.

Actually, I'd also like to remove the left and right margins from those directory pages, but that's only a side issue.
