How to "right-click save-image" when image is a link"?

Right-click on an image usually should open a pop-up-menu with a dialogue and the possibilty to saving the picture onto disk. But if the entire Picture is a hyperlink, there is no "save pic as ..."-dialogue ...

... or I'm blind or too stupid, or does this only appear in certain, very specific situations? ... :/

If image is linked outbound, than you have the popup-menu under 'Image' item in image's context-menu.

That popup contains all you need to operate with image itself.

That's what I expect ... but I'll have to doublecheck what happens as that dialogue does not always appear ...

What can make look an image as a link without being an image itself?

Answer: CSS to set background images.

You can use this macro to enhance the default one to show page images and from there download it.

EDIT: I forgot the link LOL

OK, found an example where not every image can be saved:

http://likemag.com/de/6-karten-die-dein-weltbild-komplett-veraendern-werden

The page is in german language, but don't care about that ...

There are several types of images on that page:

1. the picture just below title bar (with the likemag-logo): a right-click opens a menu with the main k-meleon view options (forward, back, reload, save page as, etc.), but no "save image as ..."

2. the main content (the "strange looking" maps): these are just "standard images without link"; a right-click offers the image-menue ...

3. some links with pics (among them videos) in the right column: a right-click just offers the "link- menu", but no pic-save option.

4. more links below the main text (below the facebook-bar): a right-click offers the "link-menu", but this time with pic-save option ...

What's going wrong?

Simply. You didn't bother to follow JohnHell's advice.
Download his .zip file, extract the .kmm and put it into K-Meleon's macros folder.
Restart K-Meleon, visit "http://likemag.com/de/6-karten-die-dein-weltbild-komplett-veraendern-werden"; and test again. smiling smiley

What is (obviously) going wrong: why is this not part of the standard built-in options (with possibility to turn it on of off in the preferences)?

Btw: I just wanted to show how the problem was appearing ...

(no edit; just setting to follow topic with eMail-reply)

The behavior is the same as Firefox or Seamonkey.

You can't save background images directly. As simple as that.

To accomplish, would involve to check every html element below the mouse pointer click for a background image and guess which one the user wants to save/view, as there are nested html elements.

Maybe you mean why the macro by Siria and me is not included by default :-?

No, there's nothing wrong with it at all. Unless I'm mistaken this is default behaviour for browsers, background images are not meant to be detected. Probably in other browsers too, if you have any just try. The only other I can test is an old IE, and it can't do it either.

There are even page authors who intentionally try to 'protect' their pics from getting downloaded too easily by clueless people by nesting them into the background.

Of course I'd like too if John's great macro would be included by default, but no idea if that might violate any standards-conformity or legality or whatever - no clue. But have a feeling Dorian prefers to rather add only own stuff ;-)

No legality violating.

When you choose to view the page info in Firefox, the new window has an icon tab called media to show the exact things our macro displays.

From my side I grant Dorian any right if he wishes to include it.

This is the classic way KM was developed ever.
That's how it have acquired much of the current default stuff.

But speaking back about the example given - I should mark that almost all images on the page by the link provided can be handled by the default context menus:
- first one can b opened with 'Background image' item;
- all the 'linkified' images do have an item 'Image' at last position of link context-menu.
