Problem to see videos from this site
Posted by: Mala Okeh
Date: March 02, 2017 08:33AM

Hi everbody,

I use K-Meleon RC2 and I have a problem seeing videos on this french site (others browsers have no problem with it)

http://www.voici.fr/tele/video-la-belle-gamelle-de-capucine-anav-en-direct-dans-touche-pas-a-mon-poste-624230#xtor=EPR-205-[NL_quotidienne]-20170302&utm_source=NL_quotidienne&utm_medium=e-mail&utm_campaign=20170302&srWebsiteId=62&srAuthUserId=ce9aa2fc6f3962cfd153bbafd31759c2

Is there a user.js script I can add?

Thx in advance

Mala Okeh

I was able to see the videos using KM 76RC2. I did have JavaScript enabled.

It seems like some prefs do prevent from these videos to work.

And it's not about AdBlock.

Most vids from that site work fine for me with KM76RC2.

Still doesn't work for me. What I get is that the video immediately disappears and becomes a black strip (see picture below).

I found out that the media type is application/vnd.apple.mpegurl.

Perhaps that is the problem. How can I add this new type to mimetypes?

Thx

It's HTML5/mp4 and should work out of the box on modern operating systems at least.
What's your OS?
In case it's WindowsXP or older, maybe someone using that OS could test and see if it works or maybe can tell what workarounds are feasible.

Hi Yogi,

I use Windows 10. Could that be the problem?

Nope.
I assume that something is broken with your K-Meleon.
- Create a new folder and unzip the KM76RC-package there.
- Don't touch any setting (AFAIK JavaScript is enabled by default).
- See if you can watch the video (make sure that only the new installed K-Meleon is running).

Did as you told, Yogi, but no change - videos not shown.

Perhaps a matter of additionnally installed codecs?

Thx anyway,

Mala

Sorry, I have no idea why it doesn't work for you.
Just out of curiosity - you say that other browsers work.
If you watch the vid with another browser what information gets displayed if you do a right-click on the player during play back?

Still a last question / observation :

I noticed that if I change the boolean value "media.mediasource.whitelist" to false
the video does not disappear, it even starts loading but does not start playing, instead it keeps on loading.
Is this due thet fact that the video is html5 and not flash?

Thx

Mala

@Mala Okeh & Rodocop

I was able to reproduce the problem shown in that picture provided by Mala!!!
No HTML5 video play back for that site! Neither with KM75 nor with KM76RC.
Only a black strip.

Why it worked for me but not for you:
I don't have (portable) Flash installed for K-Meleon.
As soon as I tested with portable Flash installed, neither KM75 nor KM76RC were able to play the clip and I got only the black strip as shown in Mala's pic.
FirefoxESR 45.7.0 is OK.
As soon as I remove the portable Flash, it works with KM75 and KM76RC as well!

I can't tell for sure if it's a K-Meleon or a Gecko bug/incompatibility since I didn't test with an old FirefoxESR 38.
However latest FirefoxESR doesn't have this issue.

Bingo!!!

Going to about:addons and setting Shockwave Flash to 'Never Activate' - solves the problem!

P.S. Not only portable Flash is the reason but any type of Flash used by KM.

And Firefox 38 ESR behaves exactly the same!

I doubt it's a "bug", considering Mozilla uses about a hundred different prefs for playing videos. Play only this, play only that, play preferably this, play isolated that, play ignoring user settings, play automatic or not, etc etc etc

So blocking flash *completely* will probably break other videos on other sides. Perhaps try to find some prefs combination that allows to play both? Most video prefs have "media" in their name. Perhaps that "webm" thing again, which was the solution in some other thread around?

Of course not. smiling smiley
My point was that it comes handy to test (or even work) with portable Flash.

I doubt it's a "bug", ...

Since Firefox 38, Mozilla changed several Flash related things. They had to keep up with Google.
So it might not be a bug but some outdated way of handling Flash anyway.

You have to deaktivate Flash for good in order to be able to watch clips on that site.
Of couse, by deactivating Flash you won't be able to watch .SWF clips anymore - at least as long as you don't activate Flash again.

Rodocop's proposal was a workaround for that specific site.
Ideally, the problem would be solved by a more recent Gecko-based K-Meleon. ;-)

siria,
I've tried to find that 'magic combo' of prefs but with no luck.

So for this particular site only full deactivation of flash works. Even with 'Click to activate' setting FF38 has this problem there.

Wondering if a restart is still needed after this flash-toggle?
IIRC at least in the older KM-versions plugins couldn't be toggled during a session. If that's different in newer KMs now that would be great!

No browser restart but page refresh is needed, like in other browsers too.

Would it be possible to make toggle button to change

plugin Shockwave Flash to 'Never Activate' or 'Always Activate' ?

The value 'Ask to Activate' does not work, could otherwise be a solution.

Thx a lot in advance

Toggling prefs is easy by macro, but whether this has any effect during the same SESSION depends from the calling function. Am afraid for plugin-toggling chances are rather slim, but do a little test:

Does it work if you use "about:config" to toggle "plugin.state.flash" between 0 (=off) and 2 (=on) or 1 (=ask)?

'Ask to activate' isn't an option. It works here just like 'Always activate' - video cannot be played.

For a macro the crucial point is:
is it sufficient to toggle that pref via "about:config"?
Or only effective when toggling via "about:addons"?

Yes, it is sufficient to toggle that pref via "about:config".
The options in "about:addons" are triggereing the respective settings in "about:config".

Indeed, you can change it in about:config and also in about:addons plugins.

So therefore it would be nice to have a button to do that more quickly.

Unfortunately me I am not able to write such a macro. Help would be much appreciated.

Thx in advance,

Mala
