K-Meleon 76 Mention at MSFN Forum
Posted by: callahan
Date: May 21, 2017 09:24PM

Just posted over the last day at the MSFN forum dealing with K-MELEON 76 PRO RC. Some have it working with Win2000. I don't know if this real news or not since I don't use Win2000.

There is a member there named Dibya who has a project in progress called 'ExtendedXP' or another member called it 'Dibya's ExtendedXP'. I am not familiar with the project and it still seems to need more work.

It is reported that newer versions of Pale Moon will work with WinXP with this, Someone posted that they are using K-MELEON 76 PRO RC with Win2000 ... only the 'portable' version ... not the exe or install version, which doesn't seem to work or it works only with WinXP SP3.

Browsers Still Working with WinXP in 2017

Also with Dibya's ExtendedXP setup, apparently Pale Moon v27.3x can run. I'd like to find out more information about that for sure.

Dibya - Posted yesterday at 08:29 AM
yes it works

heinoganda - Posted 21 hours ago (edited)
For testing yes (test computer or virtual machine), but not more from the current state. There are still a lot of work!

Hi isnt my kernel extension is cool ?
Next release i will fix all know issues . just wait and see . Next two days i will stay busy but Wednesday i will work hard then Thursday something new will some surely .

cc333 - Posted 8 hours ago (edited)
It's not XP, but K-Melon 76 Pro happens to work very well in Windows 2000 with Extended Core. I'm using it to type this post, in fact.

sdfox7 - Posted 8 hours ago
I just noticed a "nuance" with K-Meleon 76: the installer complains about needing XP SP2: but the portable version works just fine on Windows 2000 without Extended Core:

---------------------------------------------------------

So this project must be called ExtendedXP or Extended Core. Maybe some here will want to follow any developments. I will keep following it myself.

Interesting find - not because they mention K-Meleon or that it works on XP.

We knew that anyway. But they have interesting side info.

They mention a tool that updates Windows certificates (chrome and IE use that).

They also mention an XP project that has similar aims as once Kernel EX for win 9x and the similar project for Win 2000.

I signed in there and intend to follow these projects.

p.s. Extended core is probably referring to exchanging to Windows 2000 using some dll from Web Server etc. After that You can use fairly recent K-Meleon.

IE? Wasn't that the program that downloaded my first real browser?

Yes, I was going to mention that tool to update certificates. I use it and it's very good. I will go into some detail here about it. It was developed by heinoganda, who is a sharp, knowledgeable contributor there for WinXP.

He's got many things going on with WinXP as well as Dibya and others. Anyone interested in WinXP for the future should stay in touch with that forum ... for XP, Windows 2000 and such.

Older Windows NT-Family OSes

Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 2000/2003/N

Now to heinoganda's certificate tool ... if I can locate the information and download link.

If anyone here uses the XP POS update ... you need to follow heinoganda's input. He also keeps up with all the updates, time zone updates and such.

Well, I had to go back to 2015 ...

For all who are interested in an independent Update Root Certificates and revoked certificates, I want to offer a small downloader and updater (available now) without version confusion.

update 12/18/2015 Version 1.1
The creation date of the downloaded sst files appears.

update 02/16/2016 Version 1.2
Due Country-specific formats of date display, partly the creation date of sst files was not correctly displayed.

Some input about the POS updates ... heinoganda - Posted May 16 (edited)

Sorry, it was explained in the previous comments!

Download Link for Windows Installer 4.5, please install first!

I don't use the POS update hack myself but Windows Installer 4.5 must or should be installed first before the POS update.

There's much information there if interested.

The certificate updater will work on WinXP with POS or no POS.

More questions can be asked at the WinXP forum ... heinoganda usually answers very fast.

Just to add ... sdfox7 and Dibya are also top contributors along with others.

There is 'stuff' happening there !!!

... just to add, I have never quite understood about certificates. I have WinXP and IE8 ... so the certificates are needed, I think. I don't want anyone to possibly mess their computer up. I no longer use IE8, only had it for updates and those are long gone.

I run the certificate updater anyway ... just not sure if I really need to anymore. I would like to update the K-Meleon certificates, this program won't do that, only IE8, if I understand everything.

I have only IE 6. It is not allowed to enter net but the certificates kept in store by windows are also used by chromium project based browsers IMHO.

32 bit versions for XP of chromium are still available. Examples AFAIK.

I wonder whether there is a collection of vital pos 9 security updates.

So You can create a security point and then apply.

After all the updates are untested on PC hardware.

Just a heads up over at the MSFN Win XP forum. Today one of the supervisors, dencorso started a new separate thread for Dibya's ExtendedXP program. He moved the other posts from the last week into this new thread. This project may pan out or not.

Dibya: Now you have a thread for browsers on ExtendedXP.
Do not - I repeat - do not hijack the other thread which is exclusively for browsers still working on *n*o*r*m*a*l* XP SP3 (with the POSReady trick allowed, of course). Thanks in advance for your understanding and compliance.

So it should be easier to follow this project in the future.

guenter,

I have not kept up with the POS updates for WinXP. There is a thread there for that ... currently at 95 pages:

POSReady 2009 updates ported to Windows XP SP3 ENU

http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/34-windows-xp/

I read the posts, I think there may be work on a 'update rollup' package by heinoganda. I have seen it mentioned but not much else at this time.

I did decide to add the POS hack in March to my XP setup but only for one POS update. It was just an idea of only updating IE8. MS always has the POS IE8 cumulative update every month, I hadn't updated IE8 since the last regular XP updates in April 2014.

I really don't use IE8 anymore but I thought it wouldn't hurt just to apply that one POS update. It all went OK and the IE8 update is provided in the thread. In the last few months ... people seem to be having trouble getting the POS updates from MS.

A member has been supplying the direct links to the updates. These are the POS updates for May 2017 ... this is on Page 89 ... but you must install Windows Installer 4.5 first and then the POS hack, from what I read or before you get any POS updates.

From heinoganda - Posted March 18

Before you install POSReady Updates, check MSI 4.5 (KB942288-v3) is installed, otherwise install first!

Download Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable or direct WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe (multilanguage)

The main problem lately is that the updates are taking so long to download ... maybe 12 hours or more for some people. I don't want to bother with all that. My XP setup is working just fine but I didn't think it would hurt to update IE8 for an experiment. Here are the POS updates for May ...

If any of you are following the Dibya project over at MSFN. There are some 'fireworks' going on over there. The project is new and may never really work out but it certainly may be a game changer.

Dibya has ruffled 'some feathers' at times since he joined MSFN. The moderators tend to keep things in control but the dust hasn't settled yet on this new project.

Don't want to discourage anyone, but claiming that K-Meleon still runs on XP is highly dishonest in a way. Yes, it does run. But is it kept current? No. Claiming that K-Meleon runs on XP is the same like claiming it for any abandoned browser of that era. The last major browser that still actively supports XP is Firefox 52 ESR, period.

Oh look, this abandoned software runs on XP... Surprise! Point is: If no development takes place it's easy to claim support for ancient OS versions.

Actually, I can run 75.1 too (but I don't use it because of the graphical glitches).

76, with kernel wrappers, didn't work. Maybe does work with the latest system change I did, but, really, I don't care. I'm not going to spend more time in making things work. I think my years of focusing in making things work had gone. There are some updates that, from my experience I don't want them installed on my system and that are required for the latest kernel extenders. That is the reason I don't run 76 or anything newer. I gave up.

I'm in ultra-mega-die-hard-survival-mode. Just waiting for my [privacy censored] to leave this machine, this OS and switch to the next.

Yeah I know the feeling. After a certain amount of struggling and especially mostly in vain, and without having endless time for wasting, it somehow makes less and less sense.

Just for curiosity am having an occasional look at MSFN too. Looks like someone is testing now and failing with ancient KM74 alpha-beta versions, still full of bugs itself. No wonder. And the problematic SSE-requirement for the CPUs Dorian managed to fully remove only much later too.

Only a few posts for now ... the one project involved really has my interest, if I understand it correctly and that is having USB 3.0 work with WinXP.

I doubt that they are language independent. That was they main problem with the extenders for Windows 2000. There was AFAIR Japanese, Chinese and English work.
Little for any others.

If the aim is broad user base they must be installable on any system.

Thanks for providing the 'direct link' to the new thread at MSFN. I sort of did that on purpose, I thought people wouldn't have any problems finding the new topic but they might also see another thread that might be of interest to them.

I know there are several people (perhaps many) over at the MSFN that use the K-Meleon browser. I pick that up when reading different posts and they mention the fact.

Maybe two years ago, rodocop joined MSFN to talk about the newer version by Dorian ... maybe it sparked some interest to come to the K-Meleon forum. I had hoped some people with browser knowledge might come and volunteer to help. You never know !

It's probably good for members of both forums to get to know one another and give their input. This Extended Kernel for XP (ExtendedXP) project may prove to be something good in the future.

Much of what is being discussed is already over my head but I still read all the posts.

Yes - the list is also great.

These old forums have much in common. User have the same ideas.

p.s. MS should have started the joined Windows 10 approach from XP.

I say this because of shareholder value, partly.

But arguably NSA and co wanted their backdoors. & they were not implemented in XP.

Just a heads up over at the MSFN Win XP forum. Today one of the supervisors, dencorso started a new separate thread for Dibya's ExtendedXP program. He moved the other posts from the last week into this new thread. This project may pan out or not.

Browsers requiring Dibya's ExtendedXP to (sort of) Work with WinXP

Dibya: Now you have a thread for browsers on ExtendedXP.
Do not - I repeat - do not hijack the other thread which is exclusively for browsers still working on *n*o*r*m*a*l* XP SP3 (with the POSReady trick allowed, of course). Thanks in advance for your understanding and compliance.

So it should be easier to follow this project in the future.
...
Any query regarding extended Xp ask me.
Any way i want to build my own XP compatible browser top of k Meleon with many new features .
