Hello, new user here thingamabob. I just got Kmeleon working on my oldest laptop I have. It's a Dell Inspiron 1000, with a 2.2GHz Mobile Celeron and 256MB of RAM. I have a couple of questions about performance with this specific system.

Is there any way to decrease memory usage? Using more "modern" sites, my computer is hitting the page/swap file hard, which makes everything chug. The most I have done at a time is about three tabs of a lightweight website, which isn't that great IMO. Considering the amount of memory I do have, what is the best way to use the most of it with Kmeleon?

Also, my last question is about hardware acceleration. How do I check if it's working or even on? Because this laptop has a dedicated GPU, and it's not like I'm watching videos or anything. I just wonder if my GPU is being used at all by the browser, or if the CPU is taking the brunt of the work.

If anyone can help me, I would gladly appreciate it. It seems kind of dead around here, but I would still appreciate the help nonetheless.

Whoa... near impossible I'm afraid. I mean, with KM75.1?? XP?? Javascript??
(With that amount of 256 I'd rather recommand KM1.6beta26 and win98 and of course block JS and all sorts of other stuff, plus occasionally a RAM defrag, then 50 tabs become realistic :cool

As basics: switch on the Privacy toolbar (if enough space), and allow JS only where really needed.
The normal settings are found in Edit>Configuration (shortcut F2), a few in menu Tools, and tons of additional hidden settings on the page about:config, as usual with Gecko browsers. Filter for keywords.

The better (and looks like Dell doesn't give much information) add a few more RAM to it. But I was 3 years ago, in emergency status on a Pentium 200 Mhz and I had no much problems, but with a lot of patience.


About the acceleration, go to about:support url and find this line:

GPU Accelerated Windows

If it tells something as basic or none. Then or almost nothing, or nothing.

To speed up your KM you can:

1. Use AdBlock
2. Disable JavaScript
3. Put KM in RAMDisk
