Can I disable the "open folder | open file | close" window that stays open after saving an image/file?
Tick at bottom of the dialog the option to close after download.
If it is too quick and you can't, go to Preference Panel > Browsing > File handling.

I had also looked in Browsing > File handling a few times, but didn't see anything to disable it.

You aren't at all.
Could have been because we might be using different versions. You know, this is the wild jungle, ones using X and others using Y.
