I found discussion on the forum on how to set up a macro so that you can select a word and have it searched for in the search engine of your choice (http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=2193&t=2163).
Is there a way of doing something similar for a word typed in the URL bar?

there might be in the not-too-distant future (actually, there might be with javascript now, but i'm not the one to be able to tell you that), since there's work being done on adding functionality to the macro plugin. stay tuned.
