How to open link in background - via keyboard?

Okay, there are a lot of threads on open link in background. But they all seem to involve the mouse. So how to do it with only the keyboard? Sometimes the mouse seems so far away. ^_^
I've tried searching the forum and the accel.cfg file but I couldn't find any hint. And simply binding hotkeys to the 'layers(OpenLinkBg)' or the 'ID_OPEN_LINK_IN_BACKGROUND' doesn't seem to work.

You asked: "So how to do it with only the keyboard?"
Well, if you press the "Application Key on your keyboard . . .
(The Application key has an image of a mouse pointer on a menu (between the Alt and Ctrl keys (Windows Application Key) to the right of your Space Bar). Depressing this key will display the selected item's shortcut window. This is the menu that is displayed by right-clicking.) . . .
you will have the 'menu option' to "Open in Background Layer" . . . all by using your KEYBOARD only (withOUT the mouse).
Hope this helps, please let me/us know. :-)

While that does works, I knew of it and it's not what I want. I want to be able to set hotkeys! :-)

How about trying this, so that you can 'assign' a keyboard combination to open a 'link' in a background 'layer'.
In accel.cfg, add the following line, so, Ctrl + F11 will open the link under the mouse pointer in a background layer:
CTRL VK_F11 = layers(OpenLinkBG)
of course, you could 'assign' the keyboard combination of YOUR CHOICE, to open the 'link' in a new, background layer.
I hope this helps, please let me / us know.

Thanks for the suggestion. Well, ... it does work, opening the link in the background.
Succeeded Test Case
- Right clicking on the link, dismiss the context menu and then press CTRL VK_F11 (keys selected using your suggestion) works.
Failed Test Cases
- Simply moving the mouse over the link and CTRL VK_F11 fails.
- Trying to use the tab key to switch between links and opening them with the CTRL VK_F11 fails.
- Using the left mouse button and the CTRL VK_F11 fails. I dragged the cursor out of the link before lifting the button so that I don't visit that link.
- If I used the sole test case that worked on one link and then repeated the failed methods on other links, the page that gets opened in the background is the one selected by the sole test case that did work.
Conclusion
There may be a K-M bug there because there appears to be an inconsistency between the tab selected, left mouse button selected and the right mouse button selected links. Shouldn't they show the same behaviour when it comes to selecting links?
Anyway, I was hoping to tie in a hot key like SHIFT VK_RETURN to make K-M to open the selected link in the background. As it stands, I still will need the mouse to select the link. I might as well use the 'CTRL LButton' or 'CTRL RButton'. Either way, involving the mouse defeats the purpose of this topic - to find a way to navigate using only the keyboard.
