I'm going to uninstall K-Meleon now. It's much too unstable for my liking.

- Crashes when I try to log into Amazon
- Hangs when I load an image-heavy website
- Doesn't load MNGs or JNGs (what is WRONG with you guys?!?)

Yuck. Here I come, Mozilla!

All I can say to all this is: Kwityerbichen! (sound it out...)

How many times do they have to say it? The K-Meleon team is
dependent on the Mozilla people to fix two bugs before they
ship the next version. So, keep your pants on!

So what if Netscape overtakes K-Meleon to the latest Mozilla?
Netscape has other priorities, like bloat. Is this supposed to
spur the K-Meleon team to action? Tch, please...

I just logged into Amazon without a problem. Ordered a
book, too...

What porn sites don't load? Addresses, I need addresses!

Never heard of MNGs/JNGs 'til now. Is this a new porn
industry standard, or something? I don't even encounter
that many PNGs. This sounds like something that falls
under the 80-20 rule: 80 percent of people really need
20 percent of the functionality in most applications. The
remainder is crap, bloat, superfluous. I thought the whole
point of this project was to produce a light, fast, compliant
web browser without all the crap?

Go ahead. Go to Mozilla. It sounds like just what you're
looking for.

Funny how they have to make announcements about this sort of thing: if you decide that K-Meleon is not for you, well that's too bad, but remember, nobody forced you to use it ;-)

MNGs and JNGs, very interesting...

I dunno why anyone would wanna switch from K-Meleon to Netscape. That's like passing up $1,000,000 and a supermodel. For $5 and Roseanne.

MNGs are animated PNGs (MNG stands for Multiple-image Network Graphics). Consequently, their aim is to replace the animated GIFs we can see nearly everywhere. I have no idea whether they are supported by Gecko or not, but normally they should.

As for JNGs, I never heard of them before today. But a quick search revealed that they are the equivalent of JPEG for PNG (hence they offer a lossy compression algorithm). JNG stands for JPEG Network Graphic. I do not either if they are supported by Gecko.

After a quick search in Bugzilla, it seems that the library rendering MNGs and JNGs has been activated by default only lately in Mozilla (2002-03-28). Consequently, these formats should be also active in the latest K-M beta. As I don't know of any pages with these kind of images, I cannot verify.

Best wishes,

Zeiram

OK, I did some tests on Win2k. Moz RC1 suports without problem JNGs and MNGs whereas the latest K-M beta does not. My feeling is that Moz implements it with a library that isn't part of the embedding core. As I never even glanced at Moz or K-M source code, I have no idea what it would take to "plug" this library in K-M.

On the same kind of "feature", Moz on win32 supports BMP images, whereas K-M does not. Probably the exact same problem than with MNGs/JNGs.

If you want to try MNGs: http://www.libmng.com/MNGsuite/

Thanks Po for the link.

Best wishes,

Zeiram

I heard of MNGs way last year already, but then I'm a graphics freak. Haven't encountered one on a website yet. Of my 4 browsers (more drive space than moneysmiling smiley KM is still the fave. The others only come out of the "garage" if the lizzerd goes in the ditch. The idea is to have a fast, basic, uncomplicated browser for everyday use, right? eh? huh? Get whose act together?
I've got a page full of cat pictures if you guys want to see some pussy...

Mozilla and Netscape both have several years of development time under their belts, how long has kmeleon been out? Maybe a year, maybe two? Stop complaining, well, unless your gonna help.....
