Shockwave Player Installation

I stumbled across an interesting phenomenon in installing the latest Shockwave Player at: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/ .

If you go to this page under User Agent - K-Meleon 1.0, pressing the install button will download the file shockwave_installer_slim.exe. Running that file seems not to install the player for K-M 1.02. I have no idea why but it gave me the message it could not find it.

Accidentally, I went to the Shockwave Player download page as User Agent - IE6 and clicked on the install button. It tried to install the ActiveX component and a box popped up that it could not do so. Clicked "OK" on that box and noted that the center of the screen dispayed one of these puzzle pieces. I switched the User Agent to K-Meleon 1.0 and then clicked on the puzzle piece, and the Shockwave Player installed into K-Meleon 1.02.

Would anyone like to hazard a guess why this works?

I dont know, but if you want to install shockwave next time without having the stupid site checking your browser, try http://www.filehippo.com

I get most of my freeware from that site, and check it often. It's updated quickly and has a nice repository of the best freeware from each computing category (multimedia, internet apps, etc).

Nice site Ed. Thanks for the info. But, the point I was after was why K-M was actually able to install Shockwave from the Adobe site directly through the browser. K-M is notorious for not be able to utilize plugins in this way. But, again, thanks Ed.

If you look long enough on Adobe's site, you can find the full install download. It found KM, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, Firefox, and MSIE. It did not find Opera. It probably would not find Flock either, but I don't have Flock on this computer.

Finding the downloadable version that can be run from Windows Explorer, is not what I was interested in. What I found unusual is that the Shockwave Player could be installed from the webpage at Adobe in K-M in a similar way that the Shockwave Player can be installed in IE directly without the need of downloading an executable. I was wondering how this was accomplished since this is not normally how K-M acts.
