Optimization for Win98

Hello,

I am using a computer that has 32 MB RAM and 2 hard disks of 2MB and 6MB (this is enough for what I am doing - mainly word processing) and recently upgraded from Win95 to Win98. This slowed down the speed of the computer considerably. But I found some instructions on how to optimize Win98, and I could improve the “System Resources Available” after switching on the computer from 84% to 97%. (So hardly any more improvement possible on this side!)

The speed of K-Meleon improved also, after having done those system adjustments. But I am wondering, if some adjustments in the preferences or elsewhere in K-Meleon can be made, so that the speed of the browser improves!?!?
(I use version 1.02).

Many thanks
Marc M.

I'm amazed on how could you managed to install W98 on a 6Mb hard disk! Only K-Meleon (which is very light weight) needs almost 5 Mb!

I really can't say how to improve your speed by adjusting K-Meleon, because right out of the box is the fastest browser I've ever seen and can't see how to improve that.

I can only suggest to be sure not to have spyware running, to use a low resource eater anti-virus, and (I know this is not the solution you were asking for) upgrade your computer (specially your RAM). With 256 Mb of RAM you will notice a heavy enhancement of your browsing experience.

And a Pentium III can be really really cheap, in Spain you can even found them on the trash containers (I once found, long ago, a Pentium II which only needed a hard disk format to run fine).

Good luck.

PS. You must be a very patience person! :-)

No, sorry,

The hard disks are 2GB and 6GB!!!

And yes, I have no anti-virus running in the background. After each internet session I let the program Spybot check the disks.

Thanks for your reply.

You can disable some (or all) of the plugins, from Edit → Preferences → Plugins.

Just curious, what kind of processor does the computer have?

Thanks for your reply.

The computer is a COMPAQ Presario 2240. According to the Systems Info it has an "Authentic AMD-K6tm w/multimedia estensions". A sticker on the outside of the computer says "Processor MMX Aprimorado".

I would have increased the RAM already, but the technicians don't seem to be able to get anymore parts for this "antique" computer. And "antique" is only some 10 years old. :-)

Thanks again.
Marc

I have only socket 423 P4 1.5
128MB RAM
32MB VGA

but your pc is older than mine. that is very strange smiling smiley lol

My main PC is a custom build (using parts from sources as eBay an trash depots) Dell Pentium III 933 Mhz 512 RAM and ATI Radeon 9000 Pro.

With this I have no speed problems and I have played modern games as Mafia without a single problem.

Anyway my girlfriend got a new PC (also custom build) AMD Sempron 3000+ (2000 Mhz) 1 Giga RAM and ATI Radeon 9250 and runs like silk.

While I found that my girlfriend computer is amazing, the most noticeable difference is for playing modern videogames, for the day-by-day surfing there's no real difference.

For the old computer pieces, I heavily recommend you to watch eBay. I've found there things impossible to find on shops, from RDRAM (Rambus) memory for my Pentium III, to a maths coprocessor for a prehistoric 386. I buy almost anything there.

PS. I forgot to say that upgrading firmware and BIOS is another way to improve performance. I always upgrade the BIOS and firmware of all my hardware, from motherboards to DVD units, etc. Never had a problem about that at all.

Myself I have a Pentium II 233 Mhz with 160 MB of RAM. Storage is a 6 GB hard disk. I'm running Windows 95 OSR 2.5 (the very last version).

If all you do on your computer is word processing and browsing, and you want the best speed, then I think upgrading to Windows 98 was a mistake. It's like Windows 95, but with more features (that you probably don't need) and mandatory Internet Exploder 4, with its Active Desktop (responsible for most of the slowdown) and other useless things that it adds to the system.

I personally would have stayed with Windows 95, fully updated.

try AnalogX CacheBooster it could help speed things up. I used it when I had win98 running on a P2. or maybe analogx maxmem, they are very small toys to play with...........

GunniX has optimization tips for win98 on HP

http://users.skynet.be/six/gpure/tech/wintweaks/98.html

I still have the program win98lite - that he mentions - i could send by mail.

he gives links for further info e.g.to: http://www.mdgx.com/ - a site full of win tweaks.

98lite basically allows you to turn off the IE add-ons, as well as IE itself, and offers you the faster Windows 95 shell.

In essence, you'd be back to Windows 95. tongue sticking out smiley

Thanks for all your help.

I found a freeware version of win98lite. I will see what it can do.
Thanks again.

I have a 350MHz processor and 64MB RAM. The hard disk is 8 Gig, which is almost full now.

I also really liked W95 - it was very stable. Unfortunately I think I had one of the earlier versions with no USB support, which was a pain.

I like having an old computer but as Enaitz mentioned with his, it can't handle video and music very well. However, I do find it slightly annoying when my friends tell me to throw it out and get a new one. Everyone's so quick to throw things away nowadays.

The following info was posted by guenter in a thread several months ago. Depending on your current K-M configuration, the suggested changes might speed your browser.

http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/firefox/

http://www.tweakfactor.com/articles/tweaks/firefoxtweak/

Most tweaks are for the GRE & not specific to SeaMonkey, Firefox or k-meleon.
K-meleon will ignore tweaks that are only for XUL based browsers.
So You can normally do nothing wrong when You use a FFox tweak guide.
There are older threads in this forum also."

most tweaks are already in the advance preference 2, maybe tweaks for K-Meleon in use.js would have to be updated to avoid confusion?

K-Meleon will dicard identical items in prefs.js in favour of those in user.js.
So inserting the ones needed by our specific connection into user.js will do.

As wildbill said: I reposted info from the time of 0.8.x :-D

Cliff - maybe have a look at Your Thunderbird Profiles if You use that mail.
(it accumulates huge Trash files - AFAIK You can use 98/ME drivers - AFAIK there are programs that can collect the drivers into folders for later use ).

Nothing wrong with win95 and 3.x with win32 bit addon.
(As long as You did not need a newer Office or Excel
- & except that k-melon does not work :-)
Especially the old WfW was fast and stable.

Hello Guenter

This is getting a little off-topic, but I use a very old version of Eudora (3.0.something) Thanks for the tip about Thunderbird. Maybe it's OK with lots of memory, but on an old machine, it feels very slow compared to Eudora, which goes like lightning. Plus Eudora refuses all html.
