i loved one of the last posts by bex (
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=4538&t=4538) , and really brings out the mission i`ve been setting myself recently, which would be:
Find Opensource, non bloated windows software that we use everyday.
Now, allthough k-meleon isn`t final is a big step to a good alternate browser,
we`ve had a few damn good suggestions for a email clients in the post i displayed.
So wut elese have we all found?
mine go thus:
Bowser: K-meleon (of course)
Messenger: Trillian (because it has all 4 main messengers and is still smaller than icq alone)
FTP + Server: Filezilla (also use SmartFTP and G6 server ,sometimes)
PDF: Ghostscript+Ghostview (at last i can delete adobe bloat)
Others i`m still playing finding new things...list yours =o)

Browser: K-Meleon, of course (ECHO.echo..echo......echo......)
Messenger: Trillian
FTP: FTP Commander (http:/www.ftplab.com)
PDF: stuck with Adobloat yet. Most days I will do anything to avoid using PDF format at all. >:p

the pdftotext.exe and pdfimages.exe from xpdf <
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/download.html> are about as far as i'll go to get at the contents of one of those bloated-ass documents... a minimalist alternative to ghostscript if you don't care about formatting and never print anything.
oh, and the last version of winGimp is pretty not bad, too.

I used to be a fan of LeechFTP back a while ago, however as it doesn't work under WindowsXP, I had to drop it in favour of FileZilla, which is a very good FTP program. Mind you, LeechFTP used to double as a HTTP/FTP download manager quite nicely, as it could intercept HTTP URLs from the clipboard.
For anybody curious (well it still works quite well under Win95/98), then have a look here for LeechFTP:

Still looking around never have seen a really good Backup/Restore program...
I`d write one myself but i dont know c++ or anything ,maybe i`ll have to kidnap a programmer ,lock him in the basement with a pizza maker,Mork and mindy episodes on tv and a decent puter.
hmmm

Don't know which version of Windows you're using, however have you tried "My Own Backup" yet?

My open source choices:
Operating system: Linux...I prefer the SuSE flavor (www.suse.com).
Window manager (this will seem foreign to Windoze users): KDE 3.0 (www.kde.org)
Web Browser (and File Manager: Konqueror (www.konqueror.org)
FTP: KBear (www.kde.org)
Office suite: Open Office 1.0 (www.openoffice.org)
Mail client: KMail (www.kde.org)
Image viewer: the GIMP (www.gimp.org)
IDE: kdevelop (www.kdevelop.org)
and all of these can be yours if you choose Linux (or cygwin on Windoze...)

Hmm i was trying to find the best opensource for windows eviltroll, we all know the great software that is available for linux..but not free soft for ms.
I use slackware 8.1 ,but thats off topic.
Mt recent adventures are in the IRC client field,so far i have been playin with x-chat(win32 bin) and Besirc, both are very light on system load and are fast as hell,
at the moment i prefer Besirc.
http://www.bersirc.com/
But dont forget to try X-Chat

Any other new apps i`ve been missin out on ? Post your list

Ok, dusting them off, here's a couple of freeware programs for Windows from the Al. broomcloset of fame.
First off, whilst on IRC programs, my fav (always has been) is the very scriptable
ViRC. Secondly, my favourite tool for completely wiping out stuff on my harddrive is
Eraser. It also happens to be open-source software as well. Final candidate is 2xExplorer:
http://netez.com/2xExplorer/, a dual-pane Windows Explorer file management replacement. It rockz!

Slight adjustment on the 2xExplorer URL:
http://netez.com/2xExplorer/
(minus the comma of course ;-)

heh... i'm so accustomed to 2xExplorer, i forget it's not the default windoze file browser... but now that i've been reminded, yeah... it's a must-have. even writes batch files for you, which shoulda been part of windoze explorer all along... good call.

Hmmm tried out that 2xExplorer very niffty.reminds me of my days on the amiga with Opus. Now if there was a way to dump explorer totally and use 2xexplorer it would be cool especially in say Litestep or my current fave SharpE shell.

most of the PDF files can be converted to postscript with resonable results by Ghostscript. GhostView is a reasonable interface for using Ghostscript.
Both are available under the APFL license (permits any form of redistrubution, including modified binaries, *but not* for profit, and hence it is does not match the OSD).
Earlier versions of Ghostscript are available under the GPL.
