1.) how to make every new window open up as a new layer instead of a new window?

There's a 'catch' option for the layers plugin that should make all new windows appear as new layers, but i've never used it, and i can't find any documentation off hand... hopefully somebody who's using it can fill you in.

As for the menu Alt keys, right now they only work if you disable the Rebar Menu Plugin in Edit>Preferences>Plugins dialog.

Hmm one more thing, is there any way to change the encoding of text, to view chinese characters etc?
