Keyboard shortcuts don't work

Hello everyone
I have downloaded v0.7 but I cannot get any of the alt+ [key] shortcuts to work. For example, if I press alt+e I get the dropdown Edit menu, but if I press P for preferences I just get a "tink" sound. Is there anything obvious I'm missing here?

Cliff:

After you press alt+e and you get the dropdown Edit menu . . . when you press p for preferences . . . you should ONLY press p . . . NOT ctrl+p . . . right?

That is, with the dropdown, ONLY press the letter p, NOT ctrl+p.

Hope this helps, if not, please let us know.

Hello Sliderule
Thanks for your reply - yes, that's what I am doing, I am just pressing P, one finger, nothing else.

Cliff:

Can you check, with an editor, like Notepad (or whatever) if in your file . . . menus.cfg if there is a line that says:

&Preferences = ID_PREFERENCES

The menus.cfg file is usually found in the directory . . .

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\Profiles\Default\xxxxxxxx.slt\

where xxxxxxxx is unique to each user.

If you have the rebar plugin enabled, then that's the problem. It's a bug in there, which causes this problem you're having. Disable it, restart your browser, and it should work.

Perhaps you could search this forum for "rebar" for more info..

(BTW, what does that plugin do??)

re: what does that plugin do??
It makes it possible to move the File-Edit-View etc. around and mix it up with the other toolbars, and gives it the same bitmap background. LOL, I never disabled it before, and I won't do it again. I'd rather do without Alt+ menu drops than have the extra toolbar.
You might have a Problem with the letter P, I see it's underlined in Paste, which comes first and takes Precedence. Oh well, let's all hie us to the Requests page and holler for a separate Prefs button (or, anybody got a macro for that? - I know, search... smiling smiley

If you have rebar enabled you can go to preferences if you define
a macro. If you want that ALT-P opens the Preferences window:

1. Go to Edit / Prefences / Configs.
2. Click Accelerators tab
3. Add the following line:
ALT P = ID_PREFERENCES
4. Click OK button and restart your borowser. Now you should have a
working ALT-P as Preferences shortcut.

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/docs/commandid.php lists all the commands
you can call with different CTRL ALT SHIFT key combinations. Thus you can
customise your keyboard shortcuts. Look at Acceleratos tab to see
present shortcuts. Lines beginning with # are comments and you can also disable
existing keyboard macro if you start that line with #. Might be safer
than deleting the line ;-)

Configurig K-Meleon is fun. Especially if you have a little time to learn
how to define macros and accelerators. K-Meleon isn't just a browser.
It is a construction set. Too bad the default configuration is so boring.
A little more eye candy (new default skin), more accessibility options
and extended menus/popups (if it wouldn't bloat/slow down the little browser that could too much) would make a useful face lift and increase our
customer base! Better stop now before I start rambling :-)

Thank you everyone for your advice. Unfortunately I still cannot get them to work.

1. The rebar is disabled
2. There is only one user for K-M on this machine
3. In menus.cfg the relevant line reads (this is cut and pasted from it):
&Preferences\ = ID_PREFERENCES
4. Following Ismo's advice I also have an accelerator reading ALT P = ID_PREFERENCES
5. In the drop down Edit menu it has now added "Alt+P" to the right of the word "Preferences".

...but still none of the shortcuts work. sad smiley
