is find as you type available ? i have tried
user_pref ("accessibility.typeaheadfind", true), but it doesn't seem to work.

try to set via. user.js or prefs.js ( while browser is shut down & then start ).

p. s. maybe play with: browser.urlbar.autoFill & browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled
( both set true here ).

Perhaps try to verify what You like with 1.1 or so that is easier because it has
a working about:config .

It can be a broken chrome.

If you remember we had this problem with an old version (1.8.0.x) if my old brain isn't too tired.

Before respond to the next points, good new, the typeahead is fixed. a file was missing: txmgr.dll (joined)

It was what I found for 1.8.0.1

thx alain, I am not good at remembering any more
Me 0.07 Final has the dll file but the mini chrome can have no about:config.
So it must be done like long ago with K-Meleon 0.65.
