256 color skins?

I just set up an old laptop for somebody, but since it has mere ONE MB video it cannot go for more than 256 colors at resolutions 800x600 or higher, and I think its better if set it to 800x600 @8bit rather than 640x480 @16bit...

None of the KM skins I have look any good at 256 colors.
I'd appreciate if someone knows which skin in our public collection look decent at such low color settings - mainly their icons? (I can always disable background bitmaps, but when the icons look bad or horrible its not good - and in all skins I've tested so far they do look bad at 256 sad smiley )

Same as I said there. When you're using 10 year old (or even older) hardware, it's your turn to make compromises or you have to create your own skin for this special purpose. Not even Mozilla provides proper support for 256 colors (Mozilla Bug #88560).

I can proably make a skin that has less than 256 colors and see whether that works.

I'll be happy to see your 256-col theme, guenter.

I took an easy route and just modified Klassic theme with 8-bit icon pics and few small modifications (mainly I enlarged slightly the arrow buttons, I always hated those thin arrows in IE and this theme, and made red outlining in 'hot' versions, as well as cleaned up some toolbar icons to look better at 256).
I will upload it shortly (got a minor problem as I wrote in other thread, hehe).

I will look at Netscape classic because that comes from the time when they had to work around the 256 color problem.

Blueish Netscape classic was my first choice too smiling smiley
But the icons in the theme version I have (from mozilla) are too colourful 16 or 24 bit, thats why I searched for another one that could be easier to deal with winking smiley

This is my 8-bit version of "Klassic" (I name it "Klassic-8"), screencap taken from a 256-col 800x600 display:

edit:
I didn't upload it because I still haven't figure out how to upload files to our new wiki page...

Netscape Modern ( ported to M-Meleon by Eyes-Only ) seems to have been used with 256 colors originally ( toolbars he made still have 256 colors ). I updated that and some others - I also do not know how to update Wiki page smiling smiley

The other problem is that I have to find how to create skin installers (first).
