At Edit > Configuration > Toolbars, this is where I placed the hash marks to block out the Zoom buttons. But the Zoom buttons still appear. Could someone please tell me what I did wrong? I realize there is example at the bottom of the file, but appearantly I just don't bet it.

The zoom buttons have their own toolbar, all you have to do is go to the View menu, Toolbars submenu, and click Zoom Buttons to uncheck and remove the toolbar.
