Today In installed Gecko 1.8.1.8 Update to KM 1.1.2. But I was unable to find any documentation regarding the update (which BTW, probably means I should not have installed it yet.) And so far I do not notice any change in 1.1.2's behavior.

Does anyone know the purpose for the Gecko 1.8.1.8 update?

By clicking on help -> about you should see the internal info of the browser. If you updated it correctly it should say:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; es-ES; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071013 K-Meleon/1.1.2

Mine sais es-ES because it's the spanish version, yours may be different at this point.

About GRE, the Gecko Runtime Environment is the internal motor of the browser, by updating it you can fix security holes and solve some issues. It's always a good idea to keep the GRE updated.

Update to 1.8.1.8 is no official update - but bruns has prepared updates since long, safe an proven technology. You should not notice anything except that the version changed

The first update by PPL from this Forum was done on a 1. April quite a while ago for K-Meleon 0.9's GRE 1.7 when no dev was active and a GRE update was needed. To create the update Yourself You could alternatively extract the needed files from 1.5.a1 ( every dll and xpt in components folder plus every dll that is where the K-Meleon.exe is / then You delete components/compreg.dat and xpti.dat ). Originally we were able to use files from any Mozilla/SeaMonkey that had the GRE that belongs to a specific K-Meleon (e.g. 1.7x to K-M 0.9 and 1.8x to k-m 1.x) so every user like You and me could do updates - now K-Meleon needs AFAIK 2 patched files, Dorian patches them.


GRE update to 1.8.1.8 should include fix "Code execution via QuickTime Media-link files" which was fixed in 1.8.1.7 GRE for Firefox.

At least some Windows browsers were effected - No idea whether K-Meleon was, My guess Yes!

I did not manage to find out what 1.8.1.8 is fixing additionally.

p. s. The speed of the GRE improves - not with each version but generally.

GRE updates also fix rendering bugs and such. There was a point in time during the old KM 0.9 development that I couldn't get google maps to work reliably - it wasn't until I started playing with the GRE and switching different dll and xpt files that it finally worked.

Thankfully, as long as you stay within the same GRE version line (1.7 for KM 0.9 or 1.8 for 1.x), the updates are interchangable. In this case, it was easier to just use the KM 1.5a build as the source for the update since it already had all the necessary GRE embedded stuff picked out.

Appearantly I did not install the update successfully, as Help > About K-Meleon indicates the usual
K-Meleon 1.1.2

Guess I will have to try again.

BTW, KM [does] seem to be more responsive. At fist it is kind of slow, then becomes faster and faster. It seems as though KM dumps the memory cache upon shutting down the computer although I never clear cache.
