thanks fred, but there is seamonkey 1.1.6 available already (released November 5, 2007), I updated my km-build to this version a week ago.

There seem to be no new security relevant patches in 1.1.6,
as only minor Seamonkey specific bugs appear here in the changelog:

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey1.1.6/changelog

and also in the bug list of the corresponding Firefox 2.0.0.9 :

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#firefox2.0.0.9

where you can read the phrase:
Firefox 2.0.0.9 fixed a small number of rendering bugs introduced by the 2.0.0.8 release, there were no security fixes.

So I think that Gecko 1.8.1.8 from Seamonkey 1.1.5 is sufficient
at the moment.

you are probably right about the security fixes, but concerning these news (and the linked pages) there were stability problems at the 2.0.0.8 release aswell

Its not the first time that by fixing bugs the FF team is introducing new ones, or resurrect old ones, so if theres an updated release I tend to use it. I'm quite sure they don't provide every mess they make/made in the release notes, the fact that all versions (FF, Netscape, Seamonkey) are updated is enough reason for me to do the same.

There must certainly have been good reasons for the Firefox
and Seamonkey teams to release another new version after
such a short time, but this must not necessarily touch
K-Meleon, especially not necessarily the old 1.02, which
has a quite different structure.
It is of course the better solution to integrate the latest
Gecko, but as long as no safety problems are involved, and
as long as no difficulties in functionality become visible,
I am not willing to change the files almost every week, as
it seems to have been in Firefox/Seamonkey during the last
couple of months. That is why I also left out the GRE's
1.8.1.6 and 1.8.1.7, while 1.8.1.8 (Firefox2008) contained
really important safety patches.
Greetings
Fred

Fred,

Thanks for the update. I too have been using Seamonkey to manually update KM 1.0.2 from time to time with varying success. This is much appreciated and useful.

Thanks,

N

Just started using this KM this afternoon. Wasn't particularly impressed with it as it seemed no where near as fast as 1.5b which I had been using.

I added the following from http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1854509,00.asp and http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1854517,00.asp to User.js. I'm really not sure if User.js was exactly the right place to insert it but since the browser has been quite a bit faster that the 1.5b.

user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);
user_pref("content.interrupt.parsing", true);
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 100);
user_pref("content.notify.threshold", 100000);
user_pref("content.notify.backoffcount", 200)
user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 3000000);
user_pref("content.maxtextrun", 8191);

user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 48);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 16);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4);

If possible I would also like to add FavRenAdd and Create Shortcut. But as you probably guessed I've run into the fact that macros are simply in Notepad docs rather than folders as with KM's to which these features can be added. Can some one please advise me on how to add these features to K-Meleon1.02-1.8.1.8 if it is even possible.

Thanks.

Charlie

Macros of the .kmm type are not compatible with
old versions, but would have to be rewritten.
Considering the fact, that these are old versions
that very few people still prefer, I don't think
someone will try to adapt .kmm macros.
I am not sure if the adaptation is even possible
in the cases you mentioned.
If they are very important for you, I would advise
to use the official K-Meleon version.

Fred

Fred,

What about the latest FF bug (talked about here)?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/19/upcoming_firefox_patch/

The story says holes will be plugged in version 2.0.0.10

Tks,

I do not know how far this problem concerns K-Meleon.
Anyhow nothing could be done before the release of a
Firefox 2.0.0.10 and a new Seamonkey version, except,
as Register proposes, avoiding Javascript or using
the NoScript extension to avoid unwanted scripts.
To toggle Javascript the privacy bar could be used,
or the additional javascript button, if there is one,
as in my K-Meleon-NX-1818 for Linux.
As this problem has been known for eight months, and
seems not to have been exploited extensively up to now,
I hope that we do not have to worry too much about it.
If more complaints about damages should appear, this
would demand additional caution.

Fred,

Yes, the article was of two minds about the issue: outraged that they didn't do anything for so long, but sanguine about the lack of attacks. I'll take your suggestion and use the privacy bar toggle until such time as an update is available.

Much thanks

Fred,

This from MozillaZine

"The Mozilla Corporation has released Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.10, patching three security holes in the world's second most-popular browser. All three flaws, which are detailed in the Firefox 2.0.0.10 section of the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories page, are rated as high impact by Mozilla, which is the second most serious of the four vulnerability levels."

Firefox 2.0.0.10 based on Gecko 1.8.1.10 has reopened a
formerly fixed bug and does not show Canvas.draw images.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=405584

This bug has been fixed in Gecko 1.8.1.11 , and I suppose,
that Seamonkey, which has not yet been released, will
use 1.8.1.11 and should appear soon.
So I will wait with updates, in order to use 1.8.1.11, to get
a corrected version.

Fred,

Saw that, thanks. Looks like they let the bugfix get out the door too quickly. Hope they get to 1.8.1.11 asap.

I have uploaded now an unofficial updated version K-Meleon1.02-1.8.1.11 ,
Mozilla 1.8.1.11 from Seamonkey 1.1.7, Gecko 20071129 ,
for all who prefer the older build of the browser in Windows.
Updating is advisable for people who still use this old 1.02 build,
