Help with Favorites & Remembering Searches

Several folks told me to try K-Meleon. They said it
loaded web pages faster than any other browser. It
is very fast.

I've used K-Meleon for several hours and there are two
problems I hope can be fixed.

I imported my IE bookmarks (favorites). You can add a
page to the favorites list, but you can't edit the shortcut
without opening Windows Explorer. The changes you make
do not take effect until you terminate the loader and close
K-Meleon.

The second problem is remembering what you typed when you
perform multiple searches. Let's say you're using IE and
you clean out all the caches (history, cookies, etc.) The
next time you use a search engine like Google it will
remember all the words or groups of words you typed into
the search box during that session. The words you typed
are cleared only when you clean out IE's caches. K-Meleon
doesn't remember anything. If you want to repeat a search
ten times, you have to type the exact same words over and
over.

I've been using computers for many years, but I'm definitely
a newbie with K-Meleon! K-Meleon may be the fastest gun
in town, but I'm going to uninstall this fine app if I can't
resolve these two problems.

You don't mention which version of KM you are using. But more than likely you just need to apply the FavRenAdd macro extension from the Macro Library in order to rename a new Fav.

Having to completely restart KM to access a new favorite from KM is one of the drawbacks. I understand this is part of what makes KM render pages so fast. But I consider it to be a minor drawback because you can still access new Fav's immidiaely from IE Fav's i.e. Start > Favorites.

AFAIK you are correct about not having a Search cache. Edit > Preferences > Finding Websites > select Find Fitting Pages As You Type and select Auto Complete As You Type might help but I'n not sure about Searches though. Perhaps some one with better knowledge of KM can straighten this one out.

Id'd hang in there a bit longer. Some one may just come along with a better fix. smiling smiley Some KM's are still work's in progress.

I am confused. Are you using IE Favorites or Bookmarks. They are very different methods of storing favorite site URL's. If you are using bookmarks, I cannot help you as I don't use them myself.

If you are using IE Favorites then the FavRenAdd macro which is in the macro library http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/MacroLibrary will be of some use to you. It allows the user to rename a favorite and select a folder, within favorites, to which the new item will be added. You can even create a new folder. There is a way to see new favorites added using this method. Under the Favorites menu there is an entry labeled "edit". That looks at the files in Favorites real time.

I hope this is of some help to you.

There may be a workaround for searchs history. If you use the URL bar to enter your search item and under edit preferences history you have typed URL's only then the search item will appear in the URL dropdown.

One more piece to the workaround. I thought I could cut and paste the item but that does not work. Found that I had to go to tools - web search - configure and check keyword autosearch. The word "choir" itself will not resolve without adding www before it so "choir is sent to search engine instead.

Sorry for the answer coming in pieces but I an just learning how to this. Guess I did not do enough searches before.

Good to know. But using the IE Fav's seems a bit faster.

Also good to know. This gives me both url's and searches in the drop down list. BTW, I use Google for regular searches, but doing a search in this manner produces a Yahoo! search. Is there a way to perform a Google search in this manner (with the www.)?

Thanks.

The first time I used K-Meleon I went to the most graphics
intensive website I could think of. The speed at which
K-Meleon loaded those pages was simply amazing. The awful
things that happen with Microsoft's IE has kept me away
from this browser, except for downloading the endless
stream of patches and critical updates for Windows.

You're right JamesD. I should have said favorites, not
bookmarks.

I understand that K-Meleon is a work in progress. I'll try
some of the things you guys have suggested.

I appreciate all your replies. Thank you!

You can select the search engine in tools - web search - configure when checking keyword autosearch. Does not have to be your default engine but could be if that is your desire.

Most of the time I do not need a new favorite in the same session that I create it, so I almost alway see all the favorites in a new browser session. I can accept that in order to have the speed of KM.
