K-Meleon in Linux Fonts

I have managed to get K-Meleon working well in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy in wine. Unfortunately, the rendering of the fonts is not very good. I have copied all the Windows fonts into the wine installation folder, but it did not improve the look of the fonts.
Can anyone help?

i had similar issues with k-m on freebsd through xwine..wine is like an emulation, it never gives an application its' full potential.. the best thing i suggest for linux is galeon, it's not as versatile as k-m but works great on linux distros.

http://galeon.sourceforge.net/

p.s. requires gnome not kde

Most web pages display well. It seems that it's the fonts used by k-m. I'm wondering if there is a config file which can be edited to improve how the fonts are rendered by k-m itself.
I've had the same thing with the fonts in M/S Office 2007 running in wine in ubuntu. Everything works normally except the fonts used by the program itself. It may be a Windows thing.
I've tried Galeon, but I'm attached to k-m. I've successfully migrated to ubuntu from vista and am not looking back.

@ mpeter:
Can you post some Linux TrueType font that showed good for K-Meleon?

I think that i can changed the font in exe file with a Hex editor.

Are you using the latest Wine version 1.0, or an earlier
version? The fonts included in recent versions are
resasonably good, while in older versions it was useful
to add the Windows fonts Arial, Times and Verdana, as long
as there is a licensed Windows in your possession.
The fonts can be added either in the folder
/usr/share/wine/fonts (sometimes in old versions
/usr/local/share/wine/fonts), or in the wine configuration
folder $HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts (where $HOME means
the name of your home folder, usually your username).
You can also try to install and use mscorefonts, which
should be available from the Ubuntu Repository using the
Synaptic package manager. Possibly you would have to
enable the multiverse or universe additional repository
in Synaptic, because I don't know at the moment where they
are located. These mscorefonts should before all solve
the font problems in OpenOffice and may be also in MS Office.

Fred. Thanks very much for your great post. I'm using latest wine version 1.1.1
I copied msttcorefonts folder to /usr/share/wine/fonts and this solved my issue. Both Office 2007 and K-M now look as good as in Vista! I'm delighted. Your time and assistence are greatly appreciated.

@ Fred:
I belive that this font info is very useful for linux users.
Can you add it in Documentation wiki page?

Someone creted a "K-meleon and Wine" page, but this is empty.

Glad To See This, K-Meleon & Wine

I am very glad to see this, the K-Meleon and Wine page and also this interest. I do all my for fun computing in linux now and I am glad to have k-meleon along for the ride. I am noticing that much seems to depend on one's linux distro as well as the version of wine. For instance, in Puppy 4.00 I have Wine 1.1.2 with no additional fonts at all, and it looks very good. In fact, this is wine 1.1.2 with no changes whatsoever, which I think is a very good thing, that NX-18116 runs so well out of the box.

It also depends on the wine version I have noticed. For instance here, in wine 1.1.1 and some previous the File and Edit menus were corrupted when bmp menus were enabled, but not so in 1.1.2.

I would certainly like to see a dedicated forum for the discussion of wine and k-meleon issues. For those interested I will mention again the K-Meleon page at Codeweavers

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4483

I bought crossover linux so I could use codeweaver's tech support in learning some fancy tricks about wine--they had no problem with that at all. But what I have learned so far is that the fewer fancy tricks the better, which is why it is so good to see NX running so well in unmodified wine 1.1.2!. When I can I plan to advocate on the wine database also, by transferring the material from the codeweaver's page. On the Codeweaver's compatibility chart each app has a rank and k-meleon has been as high as 340 lately. I am trying to get the codeweavers developers to take an interest in k-meleon because it could provide a fast, elegant, and light browser to run in linux and be a good demonstration of the power of wine. IMHO there is no linux equivalent for k-meleon and k-meleon is the kind of program thaqt appeals to linux users. Ultimately of course I would hope to see k-meleon running in wine/linux with no compromises and wine running in every linux distro.

Well, enough.

K-Meleon is a very good choice for browsing in Linux.
There are other light, native browsers, but most are
in a very early development status, as for example
Midori or Netsurf, or are not as versatile, as for
example Kazehakase, Epiphany or Galeon.
The only browser, that is definitely faster, is Dillo,
but it does not have Javascript, and its development
has come to a halt.
So I would say that K-Meleon in Linux could get a lot
of users, looking exactly for such a browser, if ...
if people using Linux would know it. Many probably
may also have the prejudice, that a native Linux
browser would have to be faster than a browser using Wine,
which is not the case at all.

@ Fred:

Are you tried Skipstone?

I think their philosophy is very similar to K-Meleon, but still at an early stage of development.

@ desga2

Sorry, but I could not get Skipstone to work.
There is only one binary for Suse available.
I added all the libraries it asked for, but in
the end it would not work nevertheless.
People who compiled from sources for their specific
Linux distro mostly reported too, that they could
not get it working.
The browser was developed as early as 2000, and
possibly cannot work correctly with new libraries.
For the moment I quit trying.

@Fred and desga2, I have found that skipstone works in Puppy linux. If you wanted to see it you could just run the live cd without modifying your current systems at all. I think the trick is that skipstone must be run with the version of seamonkey (or firefox???) against which it was compiled present in the system. In the case of puppy 4.0, for instance, skipstone was compiled against the seamonkey 1.1.8 that is the default browser; so it works. Skipstone is not present by default, though, so it would have to be installed with the puppy package manager (easy peezee ;-) In my search for a linux browser comparale to k-meleon I tried skipstone a couple of times and found it underfeatured--no javasacript or no download ability or something like that; I can't exactly remember.

I think Fred is right, if people would know about K-M in Linux it would be extremely popular.
Now that K-M is working well on my system [I have upgraded to wine 1.1.2], I have dropped using other browers completely. Starting a thread about k-m on the Ubuntu Forums may be a good idea.
One other aspect of K-Meleon that is not often mentioned is that it uses bandwidth very sparingly. Due to copper cable theft, my only access to the internet is using a 3G HSDPA enabled mobile phone as a dial-up modem. This is unfortunately very expensive and I need to watch my bandwidth use. Not only is K-M fast, but it uses far less bandwidth than other browsers.

@ playdayz

I have seen that there is a Puppy including Skipstone.
I would have to install or unpack the Puppy .iso to
try to get out the Skipstone files. But as you report
that there are important features missing, I don't
think I will have to check this anymore.
Thanks for reporting your experiences.

@ mpeter

Having an Ubuntu user bringing the K-Meleon topic up
on the Ubuntu Forums would be a good idea to get
more popularity among other Ubuntu users.
