"Close Compuserve before installing Flash"

Hello

I'm not sure this is a browser-related issue but has anyone tried downloading the most recent version of Adobe Flash only to be told that installation cannot continue until you close the "Compuserve" application?

I looked at Task Manager and there's nothing called Compuserve running; I don't have any file by that name either.

Adobe's forums and the Mozilla ones show a few people in the same position - they're all using FF or Safari. Unfortunately there haven't been any solutions that I can see.

Anyone had the same problem?

I I remember, but there's a long time, but Netscape has been adapted to be used with Compuserve.

In fact, perhaps the setup detect a Gecko Browser started.

As desga2 says, try to send the setup with all the browsers closed. Look also in the task list to see if a process havind report with Gecko isn't opened.

And whyn't Thunderbird ?

best flash plugin for gecko is version 8 (macromedia)
ofcourse adobe sez you must upgrade which is a blatant way to make users update, however some(few) flash 9 content refuse to play on version 8... it's a compromise either way until the folks at adobe get it right ( they fired half the ex-macromedia staff after the acquisition )

anyway, if you still have problems installing v9, you can download the dll plugin directly from my site and save it to kmeleon plugins folder:
http://kmeleon.swiftfree.net/NPSWF32.dll
(2mb)

Thank you so much everyone for such intertesting and informative responses. I have downloaded the dll plugin from disrputed's link, and now it works fine. And on the way, thanks to the other contributors, learnt a good deal about the origin of this problem. Many thanks to you all.

You could install K-Meleon and place it in K-Meleon folder. This is K-Meleon forum
And Your Firefox will find it for You grinning smiley

Just like:
./program files/K-Meleon/Plugins/NPSWF32.dll

Or place it to:

./program files/firefox/Plugins/NPSWF32.dll

If You want to install in firefox folder.

It is a Netscape type plugin.

Almost all Windows browsers except IEs and IE shells have it at this place. Only the browser folder name would change to: Safari, Orca, Seamonkey, Mozilla, Bagel, Midget, Sylera, Dooble, QtWeb1.5, SRWare Iron, (google) chrome, Swift, Arora, Lunascape ...

Those that do not have it there, may have it at the old Netscape location used until Netscape 4.x.

./program files/Opera/program/plugins/NPSWF32.dll

p.s. Firefox, K-Meleon and some other browsers will auto find and use Netscape plugins in other browser install directories.

Use Adobe installer if You want it for one Firefox Profile only.
That might have an option for it.

The option needs installing it somewhere in /%apdata%/Mozilla/Firefox/profiles/RandomName/extensions/...

Other browser will not find it there.

here's the latest flash 10 release:
http://www.datafilehost.com/download-11a6620f.html

no setup required, just extract the contents(npswf32.dll) into your firefox\plugins folder
