I've set K-Meleon 1.5 to open the link in new tab if I middle-click it. But the newly opened tab opens at the right most end of the tab bar after all other tabs.
Is there an option to open new tabs next to the current tab?

Yes you have this option in Preferences (F2) -> Browsing (section) -> Tabbed Browsing (subsection) -> General (tab) -> Open new tabs (options)
