found this over at the enemy's camp, add to user.js (edit>configuration>user's settings) :
user_pref("browser.display.focus_ring_width", 0);

removes the focus.blur around links (dotted rectangle thingies) like ie 6 and above.

The "thingies" seem to come in handy when returning from a thread to a long list if new topics. And meanwhile it's not exactly scary looking.
