[RC3 pre]

RC3 is going to be the last RC version of K-MeleonCCF ME 0.09 and the final version is coming after that.

Adblock plus for K-MeleonCCF ME is included from this version.( It has no subscriptions or object tabbing but any existing AdblockPlus pattern file can be used.) The advantage of this adblockplus has over previous Adblock in CCF, is that it's faster, doesn't use CSS and saves bandwidth.

It only has basic GUI at this moment with ability to add filter rules. The white list GUI will be added later.

The previous adblock in CCF will be provided as a seperate plugin later. Now adblock plus is the default adblock utility in K-MeleonCCF ME.

This RC3 pre version is only for testing purpose of adblock plus and the updated searchbar ext plugin.

@Hao - thx for sharing.

Used it with GRE and chrome of Firefox 3.1.b which tests a new JavaScript engine.

Complains about missing MFC71u.dll on my OS (exe seems to need unicode version of MFC71, in case anyone else also has not installed this dll? A download is e.g. at http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc71u)

I tested it on picture galleries and it is very fast

A small bug here,
links won't open in new tab [for left click] after setting that option either from status bar or in prefs/behaviour

I added line to pref.js
user_pref("kmeleon.general.openurl", "ID_OPEN_LINK_IN_NEW_TAB");

but links still open in same page

My observation about common myths concerning the fastest browser on earth.

Based on Sunspider Test at webkit Org

Cave: done with a slow Pentium III. 500 mhz with less than 200 MB RAM. Win XP. Values are specific to my system.

1.)Total:106668.8ms +/- 0.7% K-Meleon 1.5.0 with Gecko 1.8.1.17pre, older SpiderMonkey ScriptEngine.
2.)Total: 31190.4ms +/- 5.6% Firefox 3, optimized SpiderMonkey engine.
3.)Total: 24459.2ms +/- 1.0% Firefox 3.1b, hybrid ScriptEngine, under a K-Meleon1.6pre = 5.).
4.)Total: 18655.8ms +/-15.2% Google newest chrome, ScriptEngine by the makers of the test. tongue sticking out smiley
5.)Total: 13544.6ms +/- 2.0% Hao's 1.9 ME, altered settings since defaults crashed the test.

IMHO the lead of 5.) results from the relatively smaller GRE as compared to 3.)

3.) has all advantages a Firefox/Xulrunner can have.
These advantages could be used additionally to build a 5.) GRE or any K-Meleon "1.6's" GRE.

How did you alter the settings please guenter? I managed to get Hao's 1.91 to run the test once at the third attempt.

Nvertheless the result was faster than with google chrome on my p4 2ghz 750 mb ram [xp]

K-MeleonCCF ME 0.09 Beta2 V3

however this one has more bugs than I thought. But the speed is just a little faster than V2, if you are interested, you can test it here:

I partly switched of jit in ./defaults/pref/kmeleon.js

pref("javascript.options.jit.content", true);

pref("javascript.options.jit.chrome", false);

But I was wrong about that was all - I get through often because I run with empty cache (new profile).

Thx Hao & will Your GRE speed tweaks also be used with normal K-Meleon for 1.9.
Or better for some that are still mostly DOSbased Windows (like ME) can the hybrid "Tamarin/Spidermonkey" ScriptEngine also be build for GRE 1.8.17?

Thanks desga2, I should have been more specific. I use linux mainly now and I routinely use 1.5.0 and Fred's NX-series in wine. Even running in wine I have found that they compare favorably (with regards to speed and memory and cpu usage) with the fastest full-featured native linux browser, which is Opera in my experience. I also advocate for K-Meleon on the Codeweavers website (makers of Crossover Linux, a commercial adaptation of wine).

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4483

The current state of the art with respect to K-Meleon and wine, AFAIK, is that in 1.5.0 the windows xp k-meleon.exe does not work (even if wine is set to imitate windows xp) but the k-meleonW9x.exe does work. With the k-meleonW9x.exe renamed to k-meleon.exe, 1.5.0 runs very well, with the one glitch that the url bar does not update properly. With k-meleonW9x.exe renamed to K-Meleon.exe, plus Fred's other optimizations, the NX-series also runs very well.

I would very much like to see Hao's CCFME 0.09 series work in wine. I believe it would be quicker than any native linux browser (for a "well-written" program, wine does not impose much of a handicap at all, as I understand it). Plus, I just like to use it--for the same reason I like riding motorcycles and driving sports cars I think!

The key to getting new programs to run in wine is to generate interest so that people put some energy into it (both wine developers and individual hackers). Codeweavers just took only 11 days to make Google Chrome run in wine--of course they are not going to do that with K-Meleon and CCFME, but every advance in wine makes it more likely that K-Meleon and CCFME will be fully functional in wine. Individual wine developers and hackers can also do amazing things getting programs to run, and so it is my mission in life ;-) to drum up enthusiasm for K-Meleon 1.5 and CCFME!

@ playdayz

I managed to make Hao's latest version work in Linux,
but it is not very stable there.
You have to add the file MFC71u.dll to the K-Meleon
main folder before starting. You can find it in the Internet.
But you also have to delete in the folder "components"
the two files compreg.dat and xpti.dat before a new start,
and, as it seems everytime again after closing the browser,
be it normally closed or after crashing.
Complex webpages, particularly webpages containing much
javascript, are not supported well with wine and gecko 1.9 ,
which is being used here.
I made a variation using 1.9 and the NX architecture,
using normal macros. It runs with fewer crashes, but there
are still too many of them to be satisfied.
I also made a variation named KMfox, based on Firefox 3.1
and even one based on a Seamonkey 2.0 alpha nightly,
but it's the same thing there : still too many crashes
in Linux. But for the moment, we can still use the 1.8 geckos,
and hope the best for the future.

Regards
Fred

@ playdayz

KMfox 3.02pre works better now, but is still experimental.
I have uploaded a tarball for Linux with Wine to Rapidshare,
if you want to test it. It is based on gecko 1.9.0.2pre and
a modified K-Meleon 1.5 . The runtimes are not included.
You will need :
MFC71u.dll, mfc71.dll, msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll .
All of them, except the first one, you will already have.
History is not yet implemented, because it's based on
Firefox, which has a different structure.
Download at :

http://rapidshare.com/files/148730260/KMfx.tar.gz.html

If somebody wants to test it in Windows, the tarball file
tar.gz can be unpacked with the 7-zip packer.

I am curious how this version will work for you, and
interested to hear the results.

Hi Fred, I have been enjoying your Kmfox. It has been running well in wine 1.1.5--not a single crash! Nothing tricky about starting it up either. I would say it has been as stable for me as 1.5.0 has. I ran it on sunspider javascript benchmark and it was at about 16,000--on that computer Iron was at about 9800. Firefox/Minefield 3.1beta was at about 14,000.

I do have one problem, scrolling is slower than it should be--very jerky and easy to get ahead of, much more so on some sites than others, with or without javascript enabled. I have this problem however on several browsers, those with gecko 1.9 and also those with webkit, especially webkit running in wine (Iron)--and I am thinking it is something to do with my particular configuration.

I had an interesting result today on my desktop; I ran Iron in windows and Iron in puppy with the crossover chromium configuration--same computer--and the Iron in crossover tested 15% faster than Iron in windows! (~2200 to 2600)

There is one thing about KMfox worth mentioning; it uses more cpu than comparable browsers. Where 1.5 would be at, say, 1.7%, KMfox would be at 9-10%. Also, it would occassionally go crazy and go up to 50% and stay there until I exited. I have not seen any other pattern to that.

I have also been using Hao's 0.09beta series in wine 1.1.5. I found that if I deleted the .wine directory, and also deleted the two .dat files in componenets, and prefs.js, then CCFME would start up every single time and run until I exited it. That is a lot to go through to get it to start though, and if I forget even one step it would not start. On sunspider it tested right about where Minefiled 3.1b tested, 14,000--not as fast as Iron (though Is ee that Guenter has had it test faster than Chrome.

thanks for the toys, larry

@ playdayz

Kmfox seems to use that much of resources, because there is
a continuous stream of error processes going on while it is
running, probably because of a still missing functionality
in wine.
You can see that, if you start the browser from a terminal
console. The terminal will not stop writing processes
until you have closed the browser.
I hope that this will improve with future wine versions.
I have now made a Kmfox 3.03 already, using the latest
Firefox update. I 've got the history to work now more or less,
using a newer history.dll kplugin (the same as the one used
in Haos version).
A strange thing is, that when using this newer history.dll,
the browser is not startable from a desktop link or
menu entry, and also not from a terminal, complaining
about not enough resources available. I can start it
only from inside the K-Meleon main directory, after going
there in a terminal by

cd /path_to_the_K-Meleon_directory/
wine k-meleon.exe

I don't know how to explain this, but this may be different
in another computer environment.

Fred

Nice to see "forcing link to open in newtab and background tab" bug has been fixed grinning smiley

Small cosmetic point: I notice that the task bar icon changes to match the active tab icon, how do I stop that please - I like plain old K_M icon permanently in taskbar.

* Bug when attempting to download/open movie thumbnail links - the download/open dialogue pops up twice. This doesn't happen on text links but does when clicking on thumbnails.
