No, I haven't made a Portable version of K-Meleon 1?5, because of the modifications of the way he profiles are handled. I didn't know if the dll I used was always usable.

And the time has passed and passed...

I haven't had much time to make it , and I'm also a little late with my new extension version.

I'm now very busy, and I haven't too much free time...

Sorry,

A+

I don't think that a K-Meleon 1.5 portable version is needed.
You can convert standard K-Meleon 1.5 in portable easilly.

1) Download 7z file (K-Meleon without installer), and 7z localization package if you like it.
2) Unzip 7z files in your USB memory.
3) Download or copy from your computer the needed libraries (msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll) to your K-Meleon folder in your USB memory.
4) Create a "profile.ini" file in USB memory K-Meleon folder.
5) Now start K-Meleon from USB memory only and config; Cache, History, Cookies.

In cache, uncheck "cache files on disk" option, and set "cache files in memory" to 20 or 30 MB, optional: you can uncheck also "cache website icons on disk" option.

In history, set "Keep a list of all pages visited..." option to 0 (zero) days.

Set others privacy options as cookies and remember login data as you like it.

You will use xpcom-core.dll that is compiled with VC 6 for the same GRE version (VC 6 is the default compiler of current SeaMonkeys = where You get it - K-meleon uses the faster VC 7.1) to prevent that the USB version creates and empty dummy K-Meleon profile folder in %apdata% folder on startup.

Portable Apps K-Meleon 1.5 works ok (=no problems under ME) on a short test.
Guess You could expected that smiling smiley

K-Meleon is freeware under GPL - anyone that points to K-Meleon credits & keeps the licence is welcome to use.

p.s. Portable Apps K-Meleon 1.5 creates a dummy folder under ME. See my comment on dll to use. Alternatively they could re-use code from portable Firefox setup that sanitiizes the folder.

The preventing or sanitzing of the dummy folder is rarely needed.

alain's 1.1.3 with GRE updated would just as save & covers tracks better...
K-Meleon 1.5 is more modern & that has merrits also.

You can find GRE updates for any K-Meleon 1.1.x (1.5 uses the same) easily.

guenter, could you please provide a link to download
the xpcom-core.dll to make a portable k-meleon 1.5.
Many thanks for your suggestions so far.

It is not vital to have the latest ( no security problem known for that file ) - You can re-use alain's old one or download a SeaMonkey that has an 1.8.1.17 GRE and take a new file from there.

I'll start with alain's file from 1.1.3 portable
(because I already use it). Thanks guenter.

I think that it's not to easy to convert a standard K-Meleon 1.5 in portable. I followed all steps you have said but two folders are created in C: within the documents and setting folder\user(...) in two different locations. Jujuland version creates no folders in C:, always using the program from a USB unit.

Yes, it's easy! This folders are creted by default, but it not used, by K-Meleon.

Read the before Guenter's post in this thread:

For that alain used a file created with Visual C 6.
You can use alain's xpcom-core.dll - and test it.

By default %apdata% is on c: smiling smiley

The K-Meleon GRE is by default compiled with the faster VC 7.1 and that creates the file that has the habbit that You observe and do not want. & No problem even for an end user DAU like me tongue sticking out smiley to download and mix SeaMonkey 1.1.12 files which are created with VC6 with K-Meleon's 1.5.1 files which are created with VC 7.1.

p.s. We mix files from similar GRE versions but different VC compilers for updates since 2004 :O.

xpcom-core.zip

- This zip file include two folders:

firefox_protable => with xpcom-core.dll file from Firefox 2.0.0.17 Portable.
seamonkey => with xpcom-core.dll from Seamonkey 1.1.12.

Can you tried with this files if this empty folders are created?

Both files make no empty folder (You can easily check with any K-Meleon when You use a profile.ini = like me smiling smiley ) and have no K-Meleon Profile in %apdata% ( else back up Profile folder = when You normaly use/have a profile there because You have installed with Multy User Support before You delete the folder for the test smiling smiley ).

The file from a normal Firefox 2.0.0.17 will also make no empty folder, I tried grinning smiley

Build instructions said: Firefox 2 is by default compiled with VC 6.

I downloaded using broadband cable and dialup on 2 different days with IE 7 and Firefox 3.0.3 and I get 'File is invalid or corrupted' when opening with 7-zip 4.60 beta.

File was created with WinZip 8.1 and tested after with 7-zip 4.57.
Guenter can download and unzip it correctly without problems and I too.

I upload it to other server: Try download it from this server.

I just put KM 1.5.1 on a USB stick. It takes approxamately 18 megs of space. I erased setdefault.exe and loader.exe because I did not think they would be needed on portable version. I also deleted extra skins.

What is it with the libraries (msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll)? I went to copy them as directed and found 13 sets of them on my computer.

Does not seem to be a way to use favorites from the stick. Guess I will make a Opera hotlist for those items I really need to carry with me. I suppose I could put the ten most useful URLs into hotlinks.

Only other problem is the speed of the USB system. KM loads real slow from the stick.

Did you format your USB stick with NTFS or FAT 32? I read several forums on the advantages/ disadvantages of each format. My old laptop doesn't have hi-speed USB 2.0 ports, has only the slower USB ports.

It is FAT. I think that is the way it was when I purchased it. I don't remember doing a format.

I disagree. Things are not always as they seem. I have never had problems with Netscape Bookmarks. And if people haven't problems with Hotlist Opera plugin is because almost nobody uses it.

The Netscape plugin is better supported and maintained that the old Opera plugin.
