how do I clear history?

I'm new to K-meleon, using it because I could not patch IE6 against the latest security flaw. Am using version 1.5.1.

I wish to clear the history of URLs I've visited, but cannot. Searched the archives of this forum for the answer without success.
Is there a way?

thanks,
Betsy

If safety is a concern - K-Meleon 1.5.2 is out.

Look at menu item Tools > Privacy > "Submenues... " There is one for history.
(I confess - I have a problem, I tanslate from German menu, but that gives You a clue where to look ...).

Also have a look at Privacy Bar via menue item: View > Toolbars...

Keeping track of some things can be fine tuned via about:config. Keywords history, MRU (URL bar history)...

Plus: History is done by a plugin. You can deactivate it and have no history at all.

Following on from guenter,

about:config set the following to 1 instead of zero

kmeleon.plugins.privacy.clearMRU user set integer 1

or manually delete from pref.js

unless you do this mru list remains in pref.js

Many people religiously clean out their browsers but totally overlook that their firewall log stores all the sites they have visited.

Plus at least one firewall also stores another very long list of recent urls in it's ini file [or used to]
unless this option was disabled [it didn't appear in the gui] in the ini file where last hosts list could be set to no instead of yes.

It's worth checking out where your firewall stores urls.

I'm using 1.5.1. Is it unsafe too? I'm using it on the recommendation of a friend who claims it has no vulnerabilities to malware. Is that incorrect?

>History is done by a plugin. You can deactivate it and have no history at all.

That would nice. I've never figured out what it was good for anyway.

>Tools -> Privacy -> Clear Data

(That doesn't work, I tried several times.)

>or manually delete from pref.js

I am not finding find this file. Where is it?

Many people religiously clean out their browsers but totally overlook that their firewall log stores all the sites they have visited. [so] It's worth checking out where your firewall stores urls.

I have no firewall. I'm using a router instead.

Hi pyro

pref.js is in your profiles folder

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\Profiles\*********.default\

user_pref("kmeleon.MRU.URL1", ""); etc

Believe me from personal experience a router isn't enough, you also need a firewall/component control to identify what is hijacking legitimate processes on your pc.

As explained in brief here.

Please update to 1.5.2, in 1.5.0 and 1.5.1 existed a bug #1050 fixed in 1.5.2.
Tools -> Privacy -> Clear Data must work in 1.5.2.

OK, but that's different from a browser vulnerability. As you probably know, Microsoft recently announced a "zero-day" vulnerability in IE, for which users could download a patch. As long as you were unpatched, you could expect malware (which then your system would then have to handle). I was unable to patch IE, because the new patch doesn't work on Win98. Eventually I'll get a whole new machine and get XP, but for now, I was told that K-Meleon was a totally safe browser with no (known!) vulnerabilities. That whatever the hackers had written to hijack IE did not affect K-Meleon.
Obviously, malware changes all the time, and one needs a firewall or malware detector regardless, but my first line of defense is to keep my software patched. If K-Meleon is vulnerable to the same hack as IE, then I'm gaining nothing by using it.

So, is my friend's statement (that it's safe) still true?

Will 1.5.2. work on Windows 98SE?

Yes, but must execute k-meleonW9x.exe rather than k-meleon.exe

K-Meleon is not using IE components. A sheer IE vulnerability can not effect You.

Yes, use the installer; it will install the right exe.

Does it have any known vulnerabilities? It's hard to imagine hackers slaving away to infect the tiny number of people using K-M, but you never know.

Thanks.
What bug, exactly, is fixed in 1.5.2? I sure hope it's the bug where you can't clear history.

pyro

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/bugs/findbug.php?summary=&description=&status%5B%5D=4&target%5B%5D=23&creator=&daterange=&moddays=&submit=Search

K-Meleon can have similar bugs in its GRE as SeaMonkey1.8.x and Firefox2.x.
Any chrome insecurities of these will normally not effect K-Meleon

If You want to find out Google: "secunia k-meleon".
Or any other product name.

It will lead You to the product's page at Secunia, which is a respected safety site.

Thank you, Guenter. I'd forgotten about Secunia.

Does 1.5.2 fix the "can't clear history" bug?

thanks,
pyro

My button at Privacy Bar works that is with German version.
You should try with Your version.

p.s. Secunia forgot that K-Meleon has shared some but not all SeaMonkey and Mozilla bugs.

Hi Guenter,

I've just installed K-meleon to relieve some tension from my old, resourceless machine and it works very well. I can see some issues that I'll probably report as "customer requests" but for now I am mostly concerned with teh fact that I can't delete individual items from teh history list.

Sometimes it is hepful to have stuff in history, as it helps to go back, but it is unsafe to store other things.

Is there a way to remove certain adresses from the history?

Is there a specific file to edit?

TIA,

Tom

History is stored in your profile in a file called history.dat. It is a very unique database file. I don't know how to edit.

Sorry to say.

No GUI implemented to select what to keep... Editing by hand too harde. I do not know.

This isn't implemented yet, but is a good idea to improve it.

I have seen one report that FF3 does not use Mork database for history. It uses instead one called Places/SQLite. http://hi.baidu.com/jouby/blog/item/f1f156369e21de360a55a988.html

Does KM's change from 1.8 Gecko to 1.9 version make it possible to change to a better database for history? Lots of users ask about selective retention of records in history, but we don't have a GUI for that so far.

I found another item about SQLite. http://www.forensicsblog.net/?p=5

Hao's ccfme 1.9 versions have updated to sqlite for cookies but not for history.

It is starting to sound like 1.6 may be ready for general use. Any thoughts on this?
The reason I have so much mem (128M;
Ramdisk cache 64M and TIF folder 64M) on the
Ramdisk is I have moved TIF's to the
Ramdisk which can sometimes hog up a lot of
mem. BTW, lately the TIF folder seems to
be caching only cookies. Does anyone have
any idea why the TIF folder would be caching cookies?

In the past the TIF folder would cach tons
of images of pages used by IE. Yet still,
IE loads pages much faster than usual with
Ramdisk.

As far as browser clearing history when the
browser is closed, I think there is an
option to turn this on and off, apparently mine is turned off, but I do not recall where this option is located.

I do not know the exact English menu names, but the dialog is located in Tools (or something like that)>Privacy>erase, delete or clean data> automatically delete. :s
Well better to wait someone with KM in English.

@slayer. F2->Apariencia de la aplicacion - Change from Espanol -> Ingles (Estados...).

It changes instantly. I have German, English (installed by default), Spanish and French installed.

You have Spanish and English. deasga2 told me. :O

How to clear history. Unless it is prevented by a bug (with 1.6 possibly? - I also had problems)

1.) Menu: View -> History -> Clear History.

2.) Menu: Tools -> Privacy -> Clear Data ... You can set automatic clearing options there.

3.) Right-Click on the history icon and chose "Clear History".

4.) F2 -> History. Here You can change global history settings and a working "Clear" button is also available. Other items that clear history seemed to work after I had used this button.

5.) Menu: View -> Toolbars. Activate Privacy Toolbar.
That bar has items where You can clear data.

Clear History is commented out by default.

Menu: Edit -> Configuation -> Toolbars. Open the file and remove the "#" in front of the shown lines and save. Then restart the browser. That gives You another fast & easy access to clear history in future.

# Clear History{
# privacy(ClearHistory)
# Clear History
# privhot.bmp[10]
# privcold.bmp[10]
